Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide novel polyamino acid-coated activated carbon having superior fittability to blood and high safety, convertible into part of bioconstituents, and used as an effective component of a blood purifying agent.
CONSTITUTION: The title activated carbon is prepared, e.g. by dipping granular or powder activated carbon in an about 0.01W0.0001% soln. of a polyamino acid in an org. solvent such as methylene chloride and by drying the dipped carbon. The polyamino acid includes poly-L-glutamic acid-γ-methyl ester. The polyamino acid-coated activated carbon is packed into column 5, and column 5 is connected to the blood circuit of the drawing to purify blood. Thus, the concn. of creatine, urea, etc. as harmful substances in blood can be reduced in a short time. The carbon scarcely adsorbs platelets, exerts no influence on serum electrolyte concn., and induces no hemolysis.
