Abstract

PURPOSE: Chlorophyll is treated with a specific acid in a dark place to produce readily title compound useful as starting material for chlorophyll derivatives and chlorophyll analog without formation of by-products through simple operation.
CONSTITUTION: Chlorophyll, such as chloropyll a or b is treated with nitric acid, preferably in a concentration range from 0.01 to 6 normal at room temperature to give phaeophytine. For example, solid chlorophyll is dispersed in nitric acid and stood in a dark place or the chlorophyll solution is coated on acid-resitant metal plates such as platinum or molybedenum, dried and then dipped in nitric acid. The phaeophytin formed is separated by filtration or centrifugation. The chloropyll is advantageously supported on metal plate to permit elimination of the separation operation.
