Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a lens system featuring a reduced amount of the crossover and the aberration by adding the noses mainly at the 2nd grid and the electrode near the grid.
CONSTITUTION: A small-diameter cylindrical projection part, so-called the nose, containing the electrode hole is provided on the end bottom surface of electrodes G2 excluding G1 among the electrodes distributed among cathode K and electrode G3 which is closest to the cathode among the electrodes forming the main lens. The protruded length l of the nose is set longer than diameter d of the cylindrical part. Thus, G2 is separated into two parts belonging to different systems, that is, G2-1 part forming the cathode lens and G2-2 part forming the prefocus lens. As a result, a proper shape and size suited to each function can be obtained in a comparatively free way, realizing a prefocus lens featuring an extremely small aberration. And thus the state of the beam spot can be improved greatly. The aberration can be further reduced if the aperture of G3 opposing to G2 is formed cylindrical with its diameter D3 set nearly identical to diameter D2 of G2 at the side of G3.
