Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a cation exchange membrane with superior cation selective permeability, chemical resistance, heat resistance and mechanical strength by oxidizing a perfluorocarbon polymer membrane bonding a sulfonly group with an inorg. oxidizing agent in the presence of halogen catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A perfluorocarbon polymer membrane bonding a sulfonyl group of the formula is oxidized at 50W150°C with an inorg. oxidizing agent such as H2O2 in the presence of halogen catalyst such as I2 to obtain a desired cation exchange membrane. I.SO2Cl is esp. desirable as the solfonyl group. The perfluorocarbon polymer is esp. pref. a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro (3,6-dioxa- 4-methyl-7-octensulfonyl fluoride). Above 100 Å is enough for the thickness of the resulting surface thin layer having a new cation exchange group to enhance current efficiency well.
