Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as perfumes in high yield, by acetylating a cyclic sesquiterpene with acetic arhydride in the presence of a catalyst system prepared through action of hydrochloric acid gas on zinc oxide or ferric chloride in acetic acid.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of cyclic sesquiterpene, e.g. α-cedrene, having at least one double bond is acetylated with acetic anhydride in the presence of a catalyst, obtained by action of hydrochloric acid gas on 0.1W0.3 mole each of zinc oxide or ferric chloride in acetic acid, to give an acetylated cyclic sesquterpene, e.g. acetylcedrene. The amount of the hydrochloric acid present in the catalyst system is preferably adjusted to 0.1W0.3 mole per mole of the cyclic sesquiterpene.
EFFECT: Preparation of the catalyst system and acetylation can be carried out in the same vessel. The amount of the acetic anhydride is very small.
