Abstract

PURPOSE: In production of annular fluorescent discharge lamps, to smoothen the insertion of lead wires into the pin of a lamp base by forming a spherical lump at the tip end of each lead wire before the base fitting step.
CONSTITUTION: A glass tube 1 to which electrodes have been sealed is transfered by a conveyer, and the tip end of each lead wire 3 connected to the electrode is bent outwardly as shown in Figs. a and b. The tip end of the lead wire 3 is heated and melted by a high-temperature burner 4 as shown in Fig. c, to form a spherical lump 5 as shown in Fig.d. Then annular tube-shaping step, evacuation step, and base fitting step are conducted to complete an annular fluorescent discharge lamp. In this case, the lead wire 3 is moved in the direction of arrow 9 into a pin 6 of a base 7, and welded or soldered in situ. The presence of the spherical lump 5 at the tip end of the lead wire 3 prevents the wire 3 from being caught on the stepped portion of the calking tip end 8 of the pin 6, and smoothen the insertion of the wire 3 into the pin 6.
