Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the excavation resistance and enable the use of a motor and a pump whose capacity is low, by cutting the side walls of a ditch with at least one pair of jet nozzles, discharging earth and sand out of the ditch with a blade and laying a cable in the ditch.
CONSTITUTION: The jet nozzles 9 are so installed in front of the blade 10 for excavating the ditch 12 on the sea bottom that the distance between the nozzles is slightly larger than the width of the ditch. Because the jet nozzles 9 act to cut only the sides walls c of the ditch, the diameter of the nozzles can be smaller than that of conventional water jet nozzles. Therefore, the motor and the pump can supply the jet nozzles with water of pressure high enough to cut hard soil even if the capacity of the motor and the pump is reduced. Since the side walls are cut out before the ditch is excavated by the blade 10, the soil deformation area is very small. This results in reducing the excavation resistance.
