Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an acrylic resin having excellent solvent resistance, by adjusting the molecular weight distribution to a specific range with a chain transfer agent added during the polymerization reaction.
CONSTITUTION: In the bulk or solution polymerization of a solution of methyl methacrylate alone or its mixture with an acrylic ester comprising ≥ 50 wt.% of methyl methacrylate, in the presence of a polymerization initiator, preferably 0.01W 5 wt.% of a chain transfer agent, e.g. alkyl mercaptans, thiophenols, and/or thioglycollic acids (esters), is added during the polymerization, preferably when the conversion attained 10W50%. The intrinsic viscosity [η] of the polymer is adjusted to 0.028W0.117 l/g; the ratio of the weight-average to the number-average molecular weight (Mw/Mn) measured by GPC method, to 2.3W6.0.
