Abstract

PURPOSE: Sludge is separated from a heavy hydrocarbon oil having specific density, by heating said crude oil, dispersing the hot oil in hot water, and separating the upper water emulsion layer containing fine sludge particles having diameter of ≤100μ.
CONSTITUTION: A heavy hydrocarbon oil having a density (15/4°C) of ≥1.05, containing sludge having a true specific gravity of 1.10W1.60 and particle size of ≤100μ is heated to reduce the viscosity below about 80 cps, and dispersed and emulsified in hot water. The suspension is left at rest, and sludge exsisting in the oil particles or between the oil particles is adsorbed in the surrounding water. The suspension separates between an upper water layer containing sludge and the lower oil layer composed of clean oil particles, from which pure heavy hydrocarbon oil is recovered.
