Abstract

PURPOSE: To make CO gas present in exhaust gas harmless by oxidizing CO gas present to CO2 easily at low temperatures by the procedure in which hydrogen is added to CO-containing exhaust gas in the presence of oxygen and then the gas is kept at a definite temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Hydrogen (H2) is added to a CO-containing exhaust gas such as those from internal combustion engine, e.g., automobile engine, etc., mineral ores sintering furnace, etc., in the presence of oxygen, and then the gas is kept at 400 to 800°C. In this case, the preferred amount of O2 present in the exhaust gas is an amount enough to oxidize CO present in exhaust gas to CO2 stoichiometrically, or 0.1 to 20 volumitric % usually in concentration. And the preferred amount of H2 to add is more than 0.02 mole, more preferably 0.5 to 10 mole, on the basis of one mole of CO present. The preferred temperature to be kept is in the range 400 to 800°C, more preferably 500 to 750°C, and also the time of keeping the temperature is preferably more than 0.01 sec, more preferably more than 0.1 sec.
