Abstract

PURPOSE: To judge adaptability of a binder quantitatively, by estimating the influence of the binder upon coking according to the measured change of unpaired electrons in producing coke through addition of the binder to coal.
CONSTITUTION: In heating coal containing a binder, the degree of carbonization can be judged quantitatively by measuring the change of unpaired electrons (spin) with an electron spin resonance instrument, etc. in a temperature range wherein polycondensation is carried out. When the change in spin concentration is measured with the ESR instrument with the coal being heated, the spin concentration reaches the maximum approximately at 500°C. While the coal is maintained at the temperature, the change in spin with time is determined to evaluate coking quantitatively. When the time (Tm) required for spin to decrase to half of the Smax is long, coke forms in sufficiently joined state.
