Abstract

PURPOSE: A five step thermochemical reaction of CH3OH, SO2, and I2 is used to provide an inexpensive H2 in a high yield throughput, under a high reaction velocity while avoiding corrosion of reactor.
CONSTITUTION: CH3OH, SO2, and I2 are reacted according to the formula (I) at 50 to 200°C, normally at 130 to 160°C, under SO3 pressure of 5 to 50 atms. Next, the reaction (II) is performed at 10 to 450°C, preferably at 190 t 400°C, under a pressure of 1 to 300 atms. The known steam modification is used for (3), the known methanol synthethis for (IV), and the known sulfurinc acid thermal decomposition is used for (V) at 780 to 900°C by using catalyst such as iron oxide, copper oxide, Pt, etc. In this process, all reactants are flowing and include no solid substances, resulting in efficient fluid reactions. Further, reaction relating to I2 as (I) is conducted below 200°C, a favorable condition for corrosion problem.
