Abstract

PURPOSE: To break an emulsion obtained by the neutralization, etc. of a composition produced by the ring-opening reaction of cumene hydroperoxide in the presence of an acid catalyst, easily and effectively, by passing the emulsion through a layer having minute pores at a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Cumene hydroperoxide solution obtained by the oxidation of cumene with molecular oxygen, is concentrated to 60W90 wt.% solution, and subjected to the ring-opening reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst (esp. sulfuric acid). The acid catalyst is neutralized with an alkaline solution (esp. NaOH aqueous solution), water phase is separated from oily phase, and acetone is removed from the oily phase by distillation to obtain an emulsion. The emulsion is demulsified by passing through a layer having minute pores (layer of hydrophilic natural or synthetic fibers and having a pore size of about 50μ), at 40W90°C.
