Abstract

PURPOSE:Steel having carbon solid solution in a specific amount is contacted with graphitic raw material such as amorphous carbon or hydrocarbon and heated at high temperature under reducing atomosphere, thereby producing tenacious, well-adhered graphite coated steel. CONSTITUTION:Steel having 1% or more of carbon solid solution is contacted with graphitic raw material such as charcoal, carbon black, CH4, C2H6, etc. and heated to about 750 to 1200 deg.C under H2 gas atomosphere. Such process produces graphite coated steel with desired thickness at a relatively low temperature. The resultant graphite coated steel has an excellent heat-, corrosion-, and abrasion-resistance and electric conductivity and as such is suitable as high temperature material, mechnical parts, and electrode material.
