Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a polyester resin for melt coating, having a low viscosity and high stalility when molten, by esterifying an ester-exchange product of a polycarboxylic acid ester and tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)isocyanurate, with an aliphatic polyol.
CONSTITUTION: 1 Mole of a polycarboxylic acid alkyl ester such as dimethyl terephthalate, dimethyl isophthalate, etc., is subjected to the ester-exchange reaction with 0.3W0.7 mole of tris(2-hydroxyethyl)-isocyanurate (1st stage). When the molar amount of distilled-out alcohol reaches about twice as much as the molar amount of the isocyanate, an aliphatic polyol such as ethyleneglycol, glycerine, etc. is added to the system to proceed the reaction (2nd stage). The reaction is carried out until the total amount of by-produced alcohol distilled out in the 1st and the 2nd stages reaches 85W95% of the calculated value. The polyester resin thus obtained has a vixcosity of as low as 10,000 cps at 100°C and 1,000W2,000 cps at 120°C, and easily coated at 120W180°C.
