Abstract

PURPOSE: A polyvalent metal compound is added to an aqueous dispersion of finely granulated polymer containing carboxyl groups to produce said aqueous dispersion that has improved pigment miscibility and gives resin coating films with resistance to moisture and water.
CONSTITUTION: Said aqueous dispersion comprises (A) a copolymer from 5 - 12 wt% of a polymerizable monomer bearing groups and 95 W 88 wt% of other polymerizable monomers, (B) 0,2 W 18 wt%, based on the copolymer, of a polyvalent metal compound as hydroxide, oxide or basic salt of di- or more valent metal, (C) an aqueous medium, and (D) aqueous ammonia in such an amount that the dispersion is kept in pH over 5. The dispersion is preferably prepared by adding a prescribed amount of a polyvalent metal compound to an aqueous dispersion produced by emulsion polymerization, then dropping aqueous ammonia to the dispersion until the pH exceeds 5, and pulverizing the polymer.
EFFECT: The content of the monomer bearing carboxyl groups in the copolymer can be increased whereby the pigment miscibility is improved.
