Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform recording in high density by providing means of detecting the reflected light from a recording medium through projection of a focal position detecting light beam, detecting the focal position of a recording beam and performing its focal position controlling. CONSTITUTION:The focal position detecting beam radiated onto a disc 11 is subjected to reflection by a disc 11 and turns back in the original optical path but it is subjected to rotation of 90 deg. to the plane of polarization of incident light by a 1/4 wavelength plate 26, passes through a beam splitter 25 and is received in a photo detector 28. Detectors 28', 28'' are placed in the positions deviated from the optical axis. When the disc 11 is in the accurate position A, the beam such as the one shown in A'' is projected to the detector 28. The outputs of the photo detectors are compensation-amplified with a servo amplifier 30 and drive a moving coil 18 to perform feedback-controlling so that the recording beam focuses on the disc 11 with the minimum beam diameter.
