Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare ethylbenzene useful as a raw meterial of styrene monomer, in high conversion, by the low-temperature, liquid-phase reaction of benzene with ethylene in the presence of hydrogen and a long-life catalyst comprising a metal supported by zeolite.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylbenzene is prepared by the liquid phase alkylation reaction of benzene (1 mole) with ethylene in the presence of hydrogen (1W0.01 mole) using a catalyst comprising a metal (such as Cu, Ag, Au, etc.) supported by zeolite. The catalyst may contain 0.1W5wt% of F, or it may be prepared by supporting the metal on a solid acid by ion exchange process. Polyalkylbenzene produced as by-products, are recycled to the reaction zone to conduct the alkylation reaction and the transalkylation reaction.
EFFECT: Improved catalytic activity; long catalytic life; and suppressed side reactions.
