Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the display contrast, by effectively holding the fluorescent light from the organic fluorescent substance dissolved or scattered in the liquid crystal into the liquid crystal layer and delivering it to the scattering center with good efficiency.
CONSTITUTION: The transparent and low refractive index layer 11 having smaller refractive index than that of the liquid crystal 5 in the light emission wave length of fluorescent light is placed between the liquid crystal layer 8 consisting of the liquid crystal 5 and the organic fluorescent substance 6 and the substrates 1a and 1b. Since the fluorescent light from the organic fluorescent substance 6 in the liquid crystal layer 8 is fully reflected at this low refractive index layer 11, it can deliver in the liquid crystal layer 8 without loss. Thus, the fluorescent light effectively reaches the center of scattering and the display contrast can be increased.
