Abstract
PURPOSE: To increase the display contrast, by delivering the fluorescent light from the organic fluorescent substance dissolved or decomposed in the liquid crystal of the fluorescent type liquid crystal display unit to the center of scattering in the liquid crystal without loss.
CONSTITUTION: The layer 11 made of the material having higher refractive index than that of the base material in the wave length of fluorescent light is placed between the liquid crystal layer 8 consisting of the liquid crystal 5 and the organic fluorescent substance 6 and the substrates 1a and 1b. When no voltage is applied between the electrodes 2a and 2b patterned, or when no light scattering phenomenon is caused even with the voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer 8 with the voltage generator 9, the fluorescent light is fetched to the liquid crystal layer 8 and the high refractive index layer 11 and is not discharged to the display side. That is, "Dark" display is caused. Next, when a voltage which can cause photo scattering phenomenon to the liquid crystal 5 is applied to the liquid crystal 5, the fluorescent light in the liquid crystal layer 8 and the high refractive index layer 11 makes fluorescent light hv2 with the scattered center 13 caused by the scattering of the liquid crystal 5 to the display side. That is, it causes "Bright" display.
