Abstract

PURPOSE: To make displaying distinct through the use of a back plate having absorption spectra in the emission spectrum region of fluorescence and further increase the brightness of the display through increased reflecting ability of the back of disposing the specific back plate to the back of the cell in proximity thereto.
CONSTITUTION: The upper substrate 1a and lower substrate 1b provided with electrode layers 2a and 2b and liquid crystal orientation layers 4 on the inside surfaces are bonded by means of an adhesive agent 3 which also serves as a spacer. Liquid crystal 5 and organic fluorescent material 6 are injected between these. A light reflecting back plate 7 which has absorption spectra in the emission spectrum region of fluorescence and whose front surface has been mirror-finished is disposed in proximity to the substrate 1b. When a voltage is applied between the electrodes 2a, 2b, light scattering centers 8 are induced in the liquid crystal and fluorescence reaches the observer 10. At this time the rays indicent diagonally to the back plate 7 are reflected by the back plate 7 and reenter the inside of the device and a part thereof again excites the material 6, thus causing fluorescence to be effectively emitted.
