Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an ultra-fine polymer latex economially in an industrical scale, by the emulsion polymerization of a hydrophilic monomer under specific conditions in the presence of a limited amount of an ionic electrolyte.
CONSTITUTION: A hyrophilic monomer such as a lower alkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid, vinyl acetate, etc., is subjected to the emulsion polymerization at a pH of about 2-7 and a temperature of about 40-90°C, in the presence of (A) 5×10-4W7× 10-3 mol/1 of a redox polymerization initiator containing (a) a reducing sulfoxyl compound such as thiosulfate and (b) a persulfate together with (c) a transition metal ion such as Cu++ as an accelerator, (B) about 0.2-0.3 parts by weight, based on 100 parts of aqueous medium, of an ionic electrolyte such as potassium chloride, diammonium hydrogen phosphate, etc. and (C) about 0.3-4 parts by weight, based on 100 parts of the aqueous medium, of an anionic surface active agent such as a lauryl sulfate as an emulsifier.
