Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a turbine rotor material with superior creep strength at high temp. and superior low temp. toughness by subjecting a steel contg. specific alloying elements to vacuum carbon deoxidation.
CONSTITUTION: A molten alloy steel contg. Cr; 10W13%, Mn; 0.3W1.5%, MO; 0.5W1.5%, Si<0.2%, Ni; 0.1W1.0%, Ta; 0.03W1.0%, V; 0.15W0.5%, C; 0.1W 0.3% and N; 0.01W0.1% is subjected to vacuum carbon deoxidation. The deoxidized steed is cast, forged at 1100W1300°C, and heated at 1000W1150°C to form a perfect asstenite structure. It is then quenched to 100°C to convert the structure into a uniform martensite one, and held at around 100°C to be homogenized. Tempering is further carried out at 550W650°C to obtain a tempered martensite structure. Ta(CN) is finely dispersion precipitated in the structure to give superior creep strength at high temp. The vacuum carbon deoxidation reduces the amt. of Si added as a deoxidizer, thus minimizing SiO2 type inclusions in the alloy and enhancing low temp. toughness.
