Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a volume phase hologram without secular changes, by laser- exposing the sensitive material for recording mainly made from polyvinyl carbazoles activated with iodine compounds, eluting and removing the iodine compounds by using solvent, and treating the sensitive material with swelling and shrinkage.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon tetraiodide by about 0.1 to 200 wt.% (preferably 2 to 50 wt.%) and an iodine compound such as iodoform are blended to polyvinyl carbazole (a dielectric), and a sensitive material for hologram recording is obtained by directly forming this mixture into a film or depositing a thin film on a supporting body. Thus made sensitive material is exposed with interference pattern of laser, and the iodine compounds are eluted and removed by using solvent such as benzene. Then, the material is dipped in a solvent such as xylene to be swelled until the volume of the sensitive material becomes more than 120% of the original volume. Finally, the material is dipped in a solvent such as n-pentane to perform shrink treatment until the volume of the sensitive material becomes less than 110% of the original volume.
