Abstract

PURPOSE: A peroxodisulfate salt is added while the polymerization of styrene monomers is carried out in an aqeuous medium in the presence of an inorganic salt hard soluble in water and a surfactant, thereby preventing the formation of fine particles to produce styrene polymers with narrow particle size distribution.
CONSTITUTION: In the suspension polymerization of styrene monomers in an apueous midium, 0.02 W2 wt%, based on the aqueous medium, of an inorganic salt hard soluble in water, 0.00001 W0.05 wt%, based on the total suspension, of a nonionic or anionic surfactant are added to the polymerization system. When the conversion of monomers attains 30 W80%, 0,00001 W 0.01wt%, based on the total suspension, of a peroxodisulfate salt is added to the system. The surfactant used is, e.g., a polyoxyethylene monofatty acid ester as nonionic or sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate as anionic surfactant.
