Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high srength and high toughness as well as reduce difference in hardness between inner face and outer face by selcting a higher quenchability (D1 value) of welding metal for inner side than the welding metal for outer side.
CONSTITUTION: For large diameter steel of a round section, the value of quenchability (D1 value) for the welding metal of the inner side which is higher than that of the welding metal of the outer side varies with the thickness, etc. of base metal used to a great extent, and therefore is not limiting. And, where the thickness of plate is greater, it is more effective to make D1 value difference between the outer and inner faces greater, whereas where it is thinner, it is better to make it samller. Although quenching from the outer side is described in this invention, the same is true of the case of cooling the inner and outer faces. In short, since the inner face cooling is to cool the inner side of closed structures as compared with the case of the outer face cooling, cooling ability tends to lower in general due to the waste water, etc. of quenching water, and thus the lowering of cooling ability can be compensated by increasing the quenchability.
