Bearings 12, 13, 17, 18 allow the guide columns and electrode support means to be horizontally rotated so that any of a plurality of chill moulds 26a-26d arranged in a circle around the axis of rotation may be served by each support arm. Power for the electrode 5 is provided from a contact 31 via an insulatingly mounted rod 21, a sliding connection 22 and conductor 23. Motor 8 and lead screw 7 drive the electrode support arm 4 up or down the guide column 2. The contact 3 may be arranged to move in a fixed track in order that it may be brought to contact the rod 21 after movement of the electrode support arm. The common axis of rotation of the electrode support arm may be offset from the central pillar by providing lateral cantilever arms which carry the bearings for the swing arms in their outer ends. Electrode loading stations or magazines 29, 30 are provided at points in the arc of travel of the electrode support assembly.
