1472058 Controlling vehicle headlamps LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 12 Sept 1974 [29 Sept 1973] 45657/73 Heading F4R An hydraulic headlamp tilting system for a motor vehicle comprises a master transducer 30 interconnected by pipes 35 with a pair of slave transducers 31, 32 connected with respective headlamps 33, 34, wherein there is provided in fluid connection with the interconnection pipes 35 an arrangement 38 for compensating for pressure changes in the pipes 35 due to variations in the temperature of the fluid. The compensating arrangement 38 comprises a transducer 57 whose output is connected through pipe 39 with the fluid in pipes 35 and whose input member 62 contacts a lever 59 which is pivoted at 63 and which is urged into contact with the input member 62 by an extension spring 60, and a sealed compensating element or capsule 58 containing a temperature expansible liquid 66 having a rigid link output member 67 abutting against the lever 59 against the action of the spring 60. Thus an increase in temperature resulting in an increase in the fluid pressure in pipes 35 is compensated by an increase in the volume of liquid 66 which causes the lever 59 to pivot clockwise and relieve the pressure in the transducer 57. The cable 45 attached to the input member 44 of the master transducer 30 may be connected to a senser responsive to the loading of the vehicle. The headlamp tilting system also includes a further transducer 36 whose input is connected to a pendulum arrangement 53 for sensing heavy braking and accelerating conditions and providing a compensating signal therefor.
