Abstract
1389882 Phosphorus-containing condensation products CIBA GEIGY AG 5 Sept 1972 [10 Sept 1971] 41103/72 Addition to 1324628 Headings C3R and C3F [Also in Division D1] Polycondensation products are obtained by condensing at 10‹ C. to 100‹ C. (a) a self-condensation product of a tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium salt or hydroxide having units of formula with (b) an amide and/or amine. The selfcondensation product (a) is obtained by condensing an anhydrous tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)- phosphonium salt or tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)- phosphonium hydroxide with itself in an anhydrous medium, optionally with an acid catalyst and optionally in an organic solvent, at 100‹ C. to 150‹ C., with the condensation being continued until 0À5 to 1À5 mols. of water have been separated off per 1 mol. of phosphonium compound, optionally etherifying free hydroxyl groups with an alkanol and optionally converting the salts of the self-condensation products into the corresponding hydroxides. The condensation of (a) with (b) may be carried out in a water-soluble organic solvent or in water with 1 to 15 parts by weight of (a) per 1 part by weight of (b). Textiles, wood, paper, furs or hides may be flameproofed by applying to them aqueous compositions containing the polycondensation products together with polyfunctional epoxides or nitrogen compounds, and then drying and heating the materials. The polycondensation products may be incorporated into plastics materials and into fibre spinning compositions to render them flameproof. In examples selfcondensation products of tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium chloride are condensed with urea, melamine, guanidine carbonate, 3- (dimethylphosphono)-propionic acid amide, acrylamide, cyanamide, 2,4,6-tribromoaniline and stearylamine; some of the products so obtained are incorporated in viscose compositions from which fibres are spun and made into fabrics, and some are made into aqueous compositions with dimethylolamine and applied to cottonpolyester and to woollen fabrics, and with pentamethylolmelamine-dimethyl-ether and applied to a cotton fabric, the fabrics being dried and heated to cure the polymers.
