A sulphonated elastomer, which may be vulcanizable, contains monocyclic aromatic groups and 0.2-21 sulphonic acid groups per 100 repeating units. The elastomer may be a sulphonated styrene-butadiene copolymer, a styrene -butyl rubber graft polymer, a graft polymer of styrene or a styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer on polybutadiene, or a styrene-isobutylene copolymer. The elastomers may be made by dissolving the unsulphonated elastomer in a solvent which is also a solvent for an SO 3 complex, which is reacted with the elastomer and is made by reacting a Lewis base containing N, P or O and a sulphur trioxide donor, to introduce the required sulphonic acid groups into the elastomer. An ionically cross-linked elastomer may be made by neutralizing at least 1% of the sulphonic acid groups of the elastomer to form amine or metal salts, the amine may be primary, secondary or tertiary and the metal Na, K, Ca, Cu, Zn, Ni, Ba and/or A1.
