The present invention relates to a method for producing a polystyrene- (polyvinyl aromatic-) molding material modified to a property. In a method customary in the art, the impact-modified polystyrene molding compound is treated in a multi-stage apparatus, i.e. in a series of stirred tanks and / or column reactors, with the rubber used for the modification. It is produced by radical polymerization of styrene in the presence (DE-A 1770392; DE-A 4 046 718; U.S. Pat. No. 2,727,884). No. 3,903,202), so-called phase inversion can proceed under controlled conditions. Phase inversion occurs when the conversion of the reaction mixture exceeds the concentration of rubber in the solution. In order to achieve a high rubber effect, the rubber-containing monomer feed is fed to a reaction mixture whose conversion is below the phase inversion point. Only in the second and possibly further steps, ie in the reaction zone, the conversion is further increased. This is the main reason for producing impact-resistant molding materials in a polymerization cascade. In this radical polymerization, volatile components (residual monomers and low molecular weight oligomers) remain, in part, in the molding material, despite the costly degassing process, and due to their odor and physical considerations Has the disadvantage of causing complaints or lowering the softening point. Similarly, it is known to anionically polymerize styrene with lithium-alkyl-type initiators (EP 176611; U.S. Pat. No. 3035033). However, this method is not used industrially for the production of styrene-homopolymers, as it is too costly. Furthermore, this method can only yield unmodified polystyrene. Manufacturable molding materials are moreover too brittle and seem unsuitable for a range of uses. The object of the present invention is therefore to provide an impact-modified thermoplastic molding composition which is practically free of residual monomers and low molecular weight, in particular cyclic oligomers (dimers and trimers of the phenyltetralin type). It was to find a way by which it could be manufactured. This problem is solved by carrying out the polymerization on a phase inversion point in one method of the type described at the outset, whereby the rubber-containing styrene solution is continuously converted to a polymer-containing phase-change solution. A styrene-butadiene-block rubber or styrene-butadiene block rubber whose styrene content is from 5 to 95% by weight, based on the total weight of the rubber or rubber mixture used, By using a mixture with polybutadiene rubber. The styrene-butadiene block rubber itself contains from 5 to 95, preferably from 15 to 85,% by weight of diene and correspondingly from 95 to 5, preferably from 85 to 15,% by weight of styrene. . Phase inversion and what is interpreted as phase inversion point are described in detail in the technical literature (for example, GE Molau & H. Keskula; J. Polym. Sci. A-1, 1595 (1966) or Angew. Makromol. Chemie 58 / 59,175 (1977)). Of course, phase inversion also occurs in the case of anionic polymerization, as long as the composition of the reaction mixture of styrene monomer, rubber and styrene polymer corresponds to the ratio in the case of radical polymerization. Styrene-butadiene-block rubbers include products having blocks or blocks of the structure (SB) n , where n is an integer of 1 or more, preferably 1 to 10 and S is Styrene polymer blocks or generally polymer blocks of vinyl aromatic compounds and B is a poly (butadiene) block) and linear block copolymers of the type SBS and BSB. is there. Instead of styrene, it is also possible to use blocks consisting of α-methylstyrene, p-methyl-styrene, t-butylstyrene or 1,1-diphenylethylene or a mixture of the abovementioned monomers. Suitable as component B are, in particular, polymers of butadiene, furthermore 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, isoprene, piperylene or hexadiene-1,3 and mixtures thereof. The transition between blocks may be clear or ambiguous. The total molecular weight of the block copolymer is determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) as the value M p (peak maximum) using a polystyrene-based calibration standard, from 50,000 to 500,000, preferably 100,000. It may be in the range of ~ 350,000. Block copolymers having blocks of styrene and butadiene units distributed in a "randomized" manner are also entirely suitable, wherein such (S / B) -blocks are of the above-mentioned type. -May appear in addition to or as an alternative to blocks, B-blocks. With this kind of block copolymers, impact-resistant and at the same time transparent molding materials can be produced. Instead of pure block copolymers, mixtures of polydienes and block copolymers can also be used, provided that the translucent or transparent properties are not excluded, provided that the polydienes are not combined with the softening component blocks in the block copolymer. It is assumed that they are composed of the same monomer components. Similarly, the hard component of the block copolymer having the same monomer component as the matrix of the molding material should be polymerized. For the preparation of weather-resistant and impact-modified polymers, it is advantageous to hydrogenate the aliphatic C = C double bonds. This can be done in a known manner, for example as described in EP 475 461 and U.S. Pat. No. 4,656,230 or 4,629,767. . For the polymer material according to the invention, block rubbers or mixtures of polydienes and block rubbers are used in such an amount that the diene proportion in the end product ranges from 2 to 50, preferably from 4 to 35% by weight. Said block rubber or a mixture of polydiene and block rubber is dispersed and distributed in the thermoplastic molding material in the form of small particles (average diameter 0.1-15 μm), while a continuous phase (matrix) Is composed of a styrene polymer. As the styrene polymer for the matrix, all aromatic vinyl compounds capable of anion polymerization are suitable. Examples include styrene, α-methylstyrene, vinyltoluene, vinylxylene, t-butylstyrene, vinylnaphthalene and 1,1-diphenylethylene and mixtures thereof. Advantageously, the monomers are reacted in a solvent, as is generally known, which should not react with the organometallic initiators normally used to initiate the polymerization. Thus, in general, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons are preferred. Suitable solvents are, for example, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene or xylene. The polymerization is initiated by an organometallic compound, as is usual for polymerizations that proceed by an anionic mechanism. Preference is given to compounds of alkali metals, in particular lithium. Examples of initiators are methyl lithium, ethyl lithium, propyl lithium, n-butyl lithium, s-butyl lithium and t-butyl lithium. The organometallic compound is usually added as a solution in a hydrocarbon. The dosing is adjusted to the desired molecular weight of the polymer, but is usually in the range of 0.002 to 5 mol% by weight based on the monomer. After dissolution of the rubber, the solution is titrated with butyllithium using an indicator, for example 1,1-diphenylethylene, to bring the matrix to a constant molecular weight. That is, before the intrinsic reaction starts, trace amounts of water and the like are removed. To achieve higher polymerization rates, small amounts of polar aprotic solvents can be added as co-solvents. For example, diethyl ether, diisopropyl ether, diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, diethylene glycol dibutyl ether or, in particular, tetrahydrofuran are preferred. In this variant of the method, the polar co-solvent is added to the non-polar solvent, usually in a small amount of about 0.5 to 5% by volume. 0. Particular preference is given to tetrahydrofuran (THF) in an amount of 1 to 0.3% by volume. The polymerization temperature may be from 0 to 130C. Temperatures between 50 and 90 ° C. are advantageous. It is advantageous to carry out the polymerization under isothermal conditions, ie at an essentially constant temperature. It is a feature of the polymerization process of the present invention that no phase inversion occurs, even though the solids content in the reactor is always above the phase inversion point. The supplied rubber solution rather distributes into the continuous phase of the matrix polymer as soon as it enters the reactor. Correspondingly, the conversion of the monomers making up the rigid matrix is empirically at least 3% by weight higher than the rubber concentration in the monomer feed. During the continuous polymerization, it is advantageous to adjust the solids content to above 40% by weight. As the polymerization reactor, a stirrer having an anchor-type stirrer or a cross-beam-type stirrer is suitable, in which case the heat of polymerization is removed by an external heat exchanger or steam cooling. However, preference is also given to so-called loop reactors, which may be formed as tube bundle reactors or electrostatic mixers (tubular zones with baffles made of metal sheet strips or the like). The polymer solution discharged from the reactor likewise serves, on the one hand, as a short-term residence area for reacting traces of residual monomers, and, on the other hand, immediately before the addition of the relevant compound having an effect. In order to interrupt the active chain ends and optionally incorporate auxiliaries such as lubricants, antistatics, antioxidants, UV-stabilizers, flame retardants, fillers, etc. Advantageously, such as occurs in the subsequent degassing zone, the crosslinking takes place via an electrostatic mixer, which serves for the incorporation of peroxides, for example for the crosslinking of the rubber particles. Proton active substances such as carboxylic acids, alcohols, phenols, thio compounds, sulfonic or phosphonic acids, mineral acids and especially water and carbon dioxide are used as agents for terminating the chain ends. The advantages of the process according to the invention are evident from the fact that a product having a residual monomer content of less than 30 ppm is obtained and that the thermoplastic molding compositions do not contain oligomers (dimers and trimers of the phenyltetralin derivative type). . Furthermore, the ability to produce impact-modified thermoplastics in only one reaction zone represents an economic advantage. The molding materials obtained by the process of the invention can be processed in a known manner for thermoplastic processing, ie, for example, by extrusion, injection molding, calendering, blow molding, compression molding or sintering; It is particularly advantageous to produce sheets, plates and moldings from the molding materials described above. This molding compound can also be used for mixing with other compatible polymers. For example, in particular, the impact-resistant polystyrene molding compositions produced in this way are suitable for mixing with polyphenylene ethers, as well as for the production of flame-retardant products, in which conventional halogens are used as flame retardants. Also suitable are compounds, phosphorus compounds and phosphazenes or triazenes (eg melamine). The solvents used in the following examples were dried over aluminum oxide. The monomers used were distilled under vacuum and the 1,1-diphenylethylene used was distilled over n-butyllithium. Example 1 A styrene-butadiene-2 block rubber having a molecular weight of Mn 180000 was dissolved in cyclohexane to give a 20% solution. Impurities were removed by titration with a 1% solution of s-butyllithium in cyclohexane and with 1,1-diphenylethylene as indicator until the red color did not disappear. Hourly, a solution of 2.8 l of styrene and 1.75 l of a rubber solution in 1 l of cyclohexane and 110 ml of a 1% by weight solution of s-butyllithium in cyclohexane are fed continuously into a 10 l reactor and at 80 DEG C. And polymerized. The conversion rate is 99. It was 5% by weight. The polymer solution is continuously degassed from the reactor and the polymer solution is degassed at 220 ° C. via an electrostatic mixer in which the aqueous carbonate solution is added in excess (relative to the initiator used) to the polymer solution. To a degassing extruder. Example 2 A block rubber of the S- (S / B) -S type having a molecular weight M n = 142000 and a butadiene content of 45% by weight is dissolved in cyclohexane and impurities are removed by titration with n-butyllithium. did. The concentration of the solution was 25% by weight. ((S / B) represents a randomly configured central block (see above)). Every hour, 5.3 l of styrene, 3.6 l of rubber solution, 1.0 l of cyclohexane and 180 ml of s-butyllithium solution in cyclohexane were continuously pumped into a 10 l reactor and polymerized at 88 ° C. The solids content was 55.9% by weight. The mixture of CO 2 and water is added to the polymer stream discharged from the reactor in an electrostatic mixer as in Example 1 and, in an extruder, at 240 ° C., paraffin oil for a given amount of polymer Degas with the addition of 2% by weight. Example 3 Two randomly arranged outer blocks consisting of styrene and 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE in S / DPE-block = 30% by weight), one central polybutadiene block (polybutadiene content = 35% by weight) and a triblock rubber of the S / DPE-BS / DPE type with a molecular weight M n = 230,000 was dissolved in methylcyclohexane. The impurities were removed from the 15% by weight solution by titration with s-butyllithium. 120 parts of the above rubber solution, 70 parts of styrene and 30 parts of 1,1-diphenylethylene were mixed and pumped at a rate of 4 l / h into a 10 l reactor. Separately from this, 75 ml / h of a 1% by weight solution of s-butyllithium in cyclohexane were metered in. The polymerization temperature was kept at 75 ° C. Post-treatment was carried out as described in Example 1. Example 4 The rubber of Example 1 was hydrogenated as follows. To 10 l of a 20% strength by weight rubber solution in cyclohexane, 1 g of nickel acetylacetonate and 2 g of triethylaluminum are added and hydrogenated at 90 ° C. in an autoclave under a hydrogen pressure of 20 bar. The rubber was precipitated in methanol and dried thoroughly. The hydrogenated rubber was dissolved in methylcyclohexane to 10% by weight. After titration of the impurities, 90 parts of styrene were added to 100 parts of this solution. The mixture was pumped into the reactor at a rate of 5 l / h and polymerized at 90 ° C. while feeding 80 ml / h of a 1% by weight s-butyllithium solution. Termination of the active chain ends was performed with isopropanol as described in Example 1.
