BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Waterproof electrical connectors are often used in the electrical industry, especially in automobiles where the connectors in the engine compartment are exposed to harsh environmental conditions and corrosive agents. The electrical connector in the engine compartment of a vehicle must withstand the high water pressure caused by water splashing while the vehicle is running. Since a waterproof connector for automobiles generally has a crimp connection portion, the number of constituent parts and the number of assembling steps are large and assembly is complicated as compared with a non-waterproof connector, so that the manufacturing cost is extremely high.

The connector 2 is manufactured in the following steps. That is, first, a metal plate is punched and bent to form a branch conductor.
Get 10. Then, the conductor 10 is placed in a molding die, and the housing 12 is overmolded on the conductor 10. Next, the sealing floor portion (sealing means) 14 is overmolded on the base wall 30 and the conductor 10 of the chamber 28 so as to surround the pressure contact portion 18 and to bias the outer sealing surface 60 of the cover member 8. A flat sealing surface may be formed on the floor surface. Branch conductor 10 to housing 12
Also, by sealing the seal floor 14, the external connection
An electrical connection between 20 and the pressure contact portion 18 is possible. Cover receiving surface sealed by the cover member 8 as described later
Except for 62 (see FIG. 2), the crimp 18 is completely sealed from the outside world. The chamber delimiting walls 32, 34, 36 extend beyond the ends of the crimp 18 to protect it from damage during handling and assembly.

In order to connect the branch conductor 10 and the electric wire 4,
First, a single electric wire seal member (seal) means 64 (see FIG. 5) is inserted into the seal member accommodating chamber 54 of the cover member 8. Next, the electric wire 4 passes through the electric wire receiving hole 66 of the seal member 64 until the electric wire 4 comes into contact with the end wall 68 of the cover member 8.
Inserted inside. The electric wire seal member 64 has seal ribs on its outer surface and inner surface. This rib holds the wire 4 on the mating surface 52
The cover 4 is elastically biased toward the electric wire 4 and the seal member accommodating chamber 54 so as to seal against the cover member 8 except for. Subsequently, the cover member 8 may be pressed into the chamber 28. On this occasion,
By inserting the press contact 24 into the press receiving slot 50, the electric wire 4 is pushed into the press slot 26,
The coating of the electric wire 4 is broken to electrically connect to the stranded wire of the electric wire 4. At the same time, the electric wire 4 outside the sealing member 64 is inserted into the V-shaped slot 42. This causes the wire 4 to be sandwiched between the opposing edges 70, 72 of the wall 36, effectively slicing into the wire 4 with the beveled contour 44 forming the sharp edges 70, 72 to act as a retaining means. The beveled contour 44 is arranged such that the narrowest width between its edges 70, 72 is adjacent to the inside of the chamber 28. Therefore, the electric wire 4 is effectively held against a tensile force applied from the outside in the extension direction of the electric wire 4. When the cover member 8 is almost completely inserted into the chamber 28, its sealing surface 60 abuts the sealing floor 14. Therefore, the protrusion 58 of the cover member 8 is
The cover member 8 is further inserted by elastically biasing the sealing surface 60 until it engages the window 40 of 28. Next, the cover member 8 is latched and fixed to the chamber 28, and the seal floor is
14 is elastically biased. Therefore, the insulation displacement connection between the wire 4 and the insulation displacement portion 18 is completely sealed from the outside.
To be done.

It should be understood that the above-described embodiments are merely one example of the present invention, and that many other embodiments can be envisioned without departing from the spirit of the present invention. For example, the sealing means 14 may be molded not only over the entire floor of the chamber 28 but only at a position adjacent to the sealing surface 60 of the cover member 8. Alternatively, the sealing means 14 may be supplied as a separate member, or may be integrally formed with the sealing surface 60 of the cover member 8. Also, the connector 2 may not have a common interconnect 16 but individual terminals each having an external contact (20). in this case,
External contact 20 may have any known shape. The branch connection is a two-pole branch connector, but of course, if desired, multiple crimp contacts 18 may be provided by extending interconnect 16 to form multiple chambers. Furthermore, it is possible to provide sealing means along the inner surfaces of the walls 32, 34, 36 of the chamber surrounding the pressure contact part 18.

According to the present invention, the base member of the connector is assembled to a structure such as a car body of an automobile, and the electric wire can be easily and quickly connected in a post process of the assembly. Furthermore, a highly reliable waterproof connector using the pressure welding technique can be obtained without the need for seal gel or grease. Since the seal member (electric wire sealing means) is compressed between the seal member accommodating chamber of the cover member and the electric wire, the electric wire is incorporated into the cover member, and temporarily when the harness is manufactured in an automatic process at the harness manufacturing site. It is held by the cover member. The seal member temporarily holds the electric wire 4 with respect to the cover member 8. Next, the electric wire 4 is electrically connected to a connector or the like by a simple method of pushing the cover member 8 into the chamber 28.
The electric wire is held by the holding means provided on the wall of the base member.
Effectively retained against external force. Further, it is possible to obtain a low-cost and simple waterproof pressure contact connector having the pressure contact contact portion 18 formed by punching and bending, which is composed of a desired number of terminals.
