Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily bend a separator with ribs which prevent oxidative deterioration in the form of bag by compressing and bending the separator at the rib, where a crease is formed, in a melt-softened state. CONSTITUTION:A microporous polyethylene separator with ribs 1 is bent in the form of bag at a crease 2 after the rib 1 where the crease 1 is formed was brought into contact with a 1mm thick hot plate to reduce the thickness of the rib to that similar to other part where the rib does not exist. The bag- shaped polyethylene separator 3 has no microcracks which usually generate in the bag forming process and function as starting points of cracks generated in charge-discharge. Density of the polyethylene at the crease is increased and oxidation resistance in this part is increased.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Field of Industrial Application The present invention relates to a lead-acid battery having a bag-shaped synthetic resin separator with lips. As the proportion has increased, the proportion occupied by the bag-shaped separator has also increased.

Conventionally, this type of separator has been produced by melt-mixing a mixture of olefin-based synthetic resin and inorganic powder as main materials with a pore opening agent, using an extruder or 1. 2. It is produced by forming it into a sheet using rolls and then extracting the pore-opening agent with a solvent or the like to obtain a microporous sheet. When a separator made in this way is assembled between the electrode plates of a lead-acid battery and used for charging and discharging, the double bond of the ole7-based resin is attacked by the oxygen gas generated from the anode, especially during charging. The degree of polymerization decreases due to damage to the bridges and branches, and deterioration progresses, eventually resulting in cracks and the like, which causes the separator to lose its function and shorten the life of the storage battery.

As a method to improve these drawbacks, the attack of oxygen gas has been alleviated by changing the shape, that is, by providing a lip on the surface facing the anode.

If the lip is crushed and folded into a bag shape without softening, cracks are likely to occur starting from the crushed lip due to charging and discharging of the battery. It was found that when the material was deformed, minute cracks were generated, and these were the starting point for oxidative deterioration.

On the other hand, according to the present invention, since minute cracks do not occur due to pressure, they do not become starting points for cracks due to charging and discharging. In fact, the density of the synthetic resin increases in the compressed and deformed areas, which improves oxidation resistance. It is thought that this will improve.
