Claims

A particulate trap filter is vertically installed in the engine exhaust passage with its upstream side facing upward, and the upstream and downstream exhaust passages of the particulate trap filter are connected by a bypass passage. At the same time, solenoid valves are provided at the bypass passage merging part of the upstream exhaust passage and downstream of the bypass passage merging part of the downstream exhaust passage, so that the outer periphery of the particulate trap filter and the downstream part of the particulate trap filter are connected to each other. A heater device is provided between each of the side solenoid valves, and the opening and closing of each of the solenoid valves is controlled to close the exhaust passage and connect the particulate trap filter to the bypass passage when the particulate trap filter is regenerated.
