Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable a worker mounted with a thermal camera to use information from the camera while the worker conducts another work by allowing the optical path outputted to the eyes of the worker from the camera through a free space to be present in the volume which nearly completely varies depending upon a helmet and a face plate. CONSTITUTION: A helmet 2 is integrally provided with a face plate 4 having such a size that is sufficient to allow a worker 3 to see the front and lateral sides. A thermal camera 1 is attached to the inside of the helmet 2 and positioned to part of the space between the wall of the helmet 2 and a protective harness 5. Then the face plate 10 of the camera 1 with which incident heat rays come into collision is positioned above the eyes of the worker 3. The output of the camera 1 collides with a coupled concave mirror/lens body 12 after passing through the sealed window 11 of a surface seal 9 and reflected by the plated rear surface 12B of the concave mirror through the lens 12A. Therefore, the worker can see the output of the camera 1 by looking at the scenery and downside without using the camera 1.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION (Industrial Application Field) The present invention relates to a thermal camera (thermal caa+era
1 device, in particular, a device that allows workers to use a thermal camera while having both hands free. (Prior art) Thermal cameras create visible images that represent the thermal intensity of the landscape viewed. Thermal cameras are particularly useful in firefighting, search and rescue applications because they can see through darkness and thick smoke.

Hand-held compact thermal cameras are now commercially available and have proven to be invaluable. OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION The present invention arose from an attempt to provide an improved thermal camera which would be of great assistance especially in the applications mentioned above. (Means for Solving the Problems) According to the present invention, a thermal camera device includes a helmet having a face plate, and a thermal camera mounted and arranged on the helmet so that a wearer of the helmet can see the output of the camera. and an optical path output from the camera through free space to the wearer's eyes lies almost entirely within the volume defined by the helmet and the faceplate.
Such devices allow workers to use the information provided by thermal cameras while freeing their hands to perform other tasks. Also, by ensuring that the optical path through free space lies within said volume, the difficulty of preventing e.g. smoke from getting between the output of the camera and the observer's eye is reduced or eliminated.

Preferably, it substantially completely surrounds the wearer's head. This provides maximum protection to the wearer and effectively isolates the volume defined by the helmet and faceplate from the surrounding environment and, therefore, from smoke or other obstructions that might attenuate the output from the camera.

It is best to use the silver plated part of the face plate or a separate mirror. The mirror surface is often fully or partially silver plated, the latter allowing the wearer to see the camera's output superimposed on the outside scene. In one advantageous embodiment of the invention, said surface is located below the wearer's line of sight when looking forward. Thus, by looking forward normally, the wearer can view the landscape without the aid of a thermal camera, and by looking downwards can view the camera's output.

In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, a lens is provided in the optical path between the output of the camera and the wearer's eye, so that the image is more easily focused by the eye. The lens is preferably located close to the output of the camera and is preferably combined with a mirror surface, which mirror surface may be formed on the surface of the lens.9 The lens is made of a plastic material, e.g. a polycarbonate material. The plastic material reduces the risk of injury to the wearer compared to glass parts. When using a mirror/lens combination, a concave shape is preferred so that the image is easily focused by the eye even if the mirror is only a small distance in front of the wearer. The invention is particularly advantageously used when the helmet is equipped with a breathing device, especially of the type that requires a seal around the face. If a mirror or IT/lens combination is provided, this should be attached to the inlet of the breathing apparatus and provided in place so that the forward view is restricted to this area in any case. ing. If a mask is used that covers the wearer's nose and mouth, it is convenient for the mirror or mirror/lens combination to be attached to the mask to match its external surface.

The camera is preferably removably secured to the helmet and can be removed if maintenance is required or adapted to another helmet. Advantageously, the camera body is located almost completely within the helmet, preferably in a compartment separated from the wearer's head. If a protective harness is provided to prevent contact between the head and the helmet wall, the camera is preferably placed between the harness and the helmet wall. Preferably, the camera is removable only from within the helmet when the helmet is not worn, but it may also be mounted so that it can be accessed from the outside. Preferably, the camera is positioned such that its faceplate is located above the line of sight of the helmet wearer.

One method of carrying out the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings. Embodiment Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the thermal camera device comprises a thermal camera 1 mounted on a helmet 2 completely surrounding the head 3 of the wearer. Helmet 2 is
It is equipped with an integral surface plate 4 that is large enough to allow the worker 3 to see widely in front and to the sides. A protective harness 5 attached to the inside of the helmet 2 protects the wearer's head from blows to the helmet 2. The helmet 2 also incorporates a breathing device having an exhaust diaphragm 6, a mask 7 covering the nose and mouth, and a pipe 8 leading to an air supply. Seal 9 surrounds the worker's face.

The thermal camera 1 is removably mounted inside the helmet 2 and is located in a part of the space between the wall of the helmet and the protective harness 5. Face plate 10 of the camera that is hit by the incident heat rays
is located above the wearer's line of sight, as can be seen in FIG. The camera 1 has a bent shape so that its aiming direction and viewing output direction are at acute angles to each other. The output of the camera 1 passes through the sealed window 11 of the face seal 9, which in this embodiment is also a lens, and passes through the concave? Lens combination 12 is attached to mask 7 and has a surface that corresponds to the outer surface of mask 7. The mirror/lens combination 12 is located in front of the wearer 3 and below the optometrist. Thus, as shown in FIG. 1, by looking straight ahead, the worker can view the landscape without using the camera l, and by looking downward, the worker can view the output of the camera. The mirror/lens combination 12 is positioned such that the eye can view the image from the camera 1 without difficulty.
