Abstract

PURPOSE: To close a gap produced by the wear of a kingpin and a steering axle boss by applying preload to drawkeys relative to the kingpin by means of disc spring washers. CONSTITUTION: A beam 12 includes an axle boss 14 freely pivotally supporting a steering knuckle 16, and the knuckle 16 includes a wheel spindle 18 and has a steering arm 20 extending to the opposite side to the spindle 18. The steering knuckle 16 is coupled to the beam 12 by a cylindrical kingpin 32. The respective cross apertures 34, 36 of the kingpin 32 and the steering knuckle supporting boss 14 support a pair of drawkeys 42, the flat portions 54 thereof colliding with the flat portion 40 of the kingpin 32. A pair of disc spring washers 44, 48 are inserted between a nut 52 and the hole terminal section 60 of the axle boss 14 to apply preload to each drawkey 42 to compensate for the wear of the kingpin 32.

In common front suspension systems for highway vehicles, such as trucks, the wheel spindles are connected to the front axle via a steering knuckle and kingpin member. The knuckle has a forked yoke that connects the knuckle to a fixed axle boss. A king pin also extends through each alignment hole in the yoke and the hole in the axle boss to hold the members together.

The axle boss, also called the knuckle support boss, thus rotatably holds the kingpin but allows the knuckle to rotate. Roller bearings mounted between the knuckle support and the lower arm of the forked yoke permit low friction movement of the knuckle about the steering axis. The upper arm supports the bushing to accommodate even lower loads.

Due to manufacturing tolerances, kingpin roller bearings and bushings
The space between the lower and upper arms of the knuckle yoke often does not fit precisely. The resulting gaps or crevices cause the parts to move relative to each other due to wear, especially after the useful life of the parts. In heavy-haul truck suspension systems, the kingpin is typically secured against rotation by a tension key with a tapered surface toward the side of the kingpin. However, as wear creates more clearance, The kingpin moves and oscillates within its associated knuckle hole during the useful life of each part. Such movement further exacerbates the wear problem.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the present invention, a steerable axle assembly provides a preloaded kingpin draw that closes clearances caused by wear in the kingpin and steering axle boss environment.
- Form a (drawkey) system. In a preferred configuration, the assembly includes a transverse axle beam having a pair of upwardly oriented knuckle support bosses at each end. Each boss has vertically spaced ends and a hole extending through the ends. A steering knuckle is pivotally mounted to each boss by upper and lower arms having aligned holes. A cylindrical king pin extends through a hole in the boss and a hole in each arm to retain the steering knuckle to the boss.

Each boss defines a transverse hole extending transversely to the hole and partially intersecting the hole. The draw keys are also supported within each side hole. Each draw key has an elongated head with a tapered flat surface adapted to abut the kingpin. The draw key has a threaded shaft on the opposite side of the head. The end of this shaft portion extends outside the lateral hole. A draw key nut is threaded onto the end of the threaded shaft portion to secure the draw key head to the king pin.
