Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of a connection defect and the failure of an IC for driving by connecting the IC for driving to a film sheet surface near a liquid crystal display region and integrally providing a reinforcing body having rigidity on the rear surface. CONSTITUTION:The IC 2 for driving of the plastic type liquid crystal display device is packaged by electrically connecting the same to a bonding part of conductive patterns 4b drawn out of the liquid crystal display region 4 in the extension part of the resin film sheet 4a. The reinforcing body 5 having the rigidity is integrally disposed on the rear surface of the film sheet 4a packaged with the IC 2 for driving. The reinforcing body 5 consists of, for example, a stainless steel plate sized 0.2nm thick and 10X10nm. As a result, the stresses acting on the juncture between the IC 2 for driving and wiring patterns and the IC itself are easily removed even if bending stresses are applied on the display region 4. The generation of the connection defect and the failure of the IC are thus prevented.

(Prior art) A transparent substrate, such as a glass plate or a resin film sheet, with a desired electrode pattern formed on its main surface by a transparent conductive film (layer) is arranged with the electrode pattern forming surfaces facing each other, and a liquid crystal material is placed between them. Liquid crystal display devices with a sealed structure are attracting attention as flat displays. In other words, since liquid crystal display devices have the characteristics of being thin and lightweight, CRT
It is used in computers and word processors as a flat display instead of (cathode ray tube). Therefore, this type of liquid crystal display device is designed to drive and control the liquid crystal display device body (liquid crystal display functional area) and the required display for the purpose of application to, for example, multi-function cards, memory cards, card pagers, and handheld terminals. Attempts have been made to integrate means for performing a display function, such as a driving IC, to make the device even more compact. That is, it is known that a liquid crystal display device body and a driving IC for driving and controlling the liquid crystal display device are integrated, and configured as shown in FIG. 2 and FIG. 3, respectively, as cross-sections of essential parts are shown. In FIG. 2, a liquid crystal display device main body 1 and a substrate 2a on which a driving IC 2 for driving and controlling the liquid crystal display device main body 1 is mounted are connected together by a flexible printed wiring board 3 via, for example, an anisotropic conductive adhesive 3a. FIG. 3 shows a structure in which a part of the glass plate 1a constituting the main body 1 of the liquid crystal display device is extended and a driving IC 2 is mounted on this extended part.

That is, in the configuration shown in FIG. 2, the wire bonding method or the TAB method (tape automated bonding) is employed for mounting and mounting the driving IC 2 on the wiring board 2a. However, in this connection method, there is a problem in that it is difficult to achieve a highly reliable connection when the number of driving ICs 2 is increased or the connection pitch is made finer as the display screen becomes larger and more precise.

On the other hand, in the case of the configuration shown in FIG. 3, although it is possible to improve the connection problem of the driving IC as described above, there are problems such as difficulty in handling. In other words, since this (1) is made of glass substrates 1a and 1a' such as the liquid crystal display device body 1, there is a limit to how thin and light it can be made. There are problems such as easy JML damage when assembling and configuring equipment.

A possible solution to the above problem is to use a plastic type liquid crystal display device. In other words, in a plastic type liquid crystal display device, it is conceivable to extend a part of the film sheet and mount and mount a driving IC on this part to obtain a configuration as shown in FIG. However, in this case, since the film sheet is highly flexible, stress is applied to the connection between the drive IC and the wiring (conductor) pattern, as well as to the drive IC itself, which can easily cause contact failure, which poses a problem in terms of reliability. There is.

[Effects of the Invention] As described above, the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention takes full advantage of the features of the plastic type, such as being easy to reduce in thickness and size, being lightweight, and having flexibility. Not only that, but also the reliability of the electrical connection of the physically mounted driving IC is sufficiently maintained. In other words, since the area where the drive IC is mounted is reinforced by the reinforcing body, even if bending stress is applied to the crystal display function area (liquid crystal display main body), the drive IC and wiring (conductor) pattern are The stress applied to the connection portion and the drive IC itself is easily alleviated, the occurrence of connection failures and damage to the drive IC are prevented, and the required functions are maintained and exhibited over a long period of time.
