Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable electricity to be discharged at low voltage even if a cold cathode type electrode is used by constituting a discharge electrode out of a plate electrode and plate-shaped auxiliary electrodes arranged at both sides of this plate electrode and a filament arranged between these auxiliary electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A discharge electrode is composed of a plate electrode 4a, auxiliary electrodes 4b, 4b arranged at both sides of it, each of which has a cross section of U letter shape, and a filament 4c whose ends are connected to inside faces of each of these auxiliary electrodes. In the discharge electrode 4, the plate electrode 4a and auxiliary electrodes 4b, 4b works as cold cathodes and the filament 4c works as a hot cathode. And when discharge is started, the discharge begins between filaments 4c, 4c whose discharge start voltage are low, and thereafter the discharge between plate electrodes 4a, 4a is started at the specified discharge maintaining electrode.

(b) Prior Art Liquid crystal panels have the following advantages: they are light and thin and consume little power; therefore, in addition to liquid crystal TVs, they are widely used as display devices for word processors, personal computers, and the like. On the other hand, since the liquid crystal itself does not emit light, it can be used as a backlight, for example, as disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-open No. 61-47050 (
It is necessary to use a flat fluorescent lamp as described in TI OI J61/67)K.

As the discharge electrode of the flat fluorescent lamp, a flat cold cathode type is used. This cold cathode type electrode is more suitable for flat containers than the hot cathode type, and has superior strength and durability, so it was suitable for flat fluorescent lamps.
