Celazole(登録商標)S26ポリベンゾイミダゾール(PBI)溶液は、PBI Performance Products Inc.(USA)から提供された。溶液は、N,N-ジメチルアセトアミド(DMAc)中にPBI26.2wt.%と、塩化リチウム(安定剤)1.5wt.%とを含有していた。不織ポリプロピレン布Novatexx2472は、Freudenberg Filtration Technologies(ドイツ)製であった。DMAc(Sigma)、アセトニトリル(MeCN、VWR)、アセトン(VWR)、エタノール(EtOH、VWR)、イソプロパノール(IPA、VWR)、及びDMF(Sigma)などの溶媒は全て、受け取ったままの状態で使用した。架橋のための化学物質は、Sigma製のTMC(架橋剤)、無水テトラヒドロフラン(THF)(架橋媒体)、及び無水2-MeTHF(架橋媒体)であった。ローズベンガル、ファストグリーンFCF、レマゾールブリリアントブルーR(RBB)、テトラサイクリン、サフラニンO、メチレンブルー、ニュートラルレッド(NR)、及びL-α-ホスファチジルコリン(L-α-レシチン、ホスファチジルコリンとリン脂質との混合物)をSigmaから調達し、作製した膜の除去率及び適用試験のためのモデル溶質として採用した。これらの分子構造及び分子量(MW)を、図1に示す。
非溶媒誘起相分離(NIPS)技法を利用して、一体的に表皮を施された非対称PBI膜を作製した。Celazole(登録商標)S26のPBI溶液をDMAcでPBI濃度が17wt.%になるまで希釈し、均質なドープ溶液が得られるまで室温で連続して撹拌した。次いで、ドープ 溶液 を一晩放置して、気泡を除去した。調整可能なキャスティングナイフ(BYK-Gardner GmbH、Germany)を使用し、250μmのギャップで ポリプロピレン不織布上に膜をキャストした。続いて、この初期段階の膜を室温の水凝固浴に浸漬し、脱イオン(DI)水中に2日間保持した。続いて、PBI膜をTHF又は2-MeTHFのいずれかと3回、それぞれ30分間溶媒交換して残留水を除去した。
(i)化学的分析
フーリエ変換赤外分光法(FTIR)を採用して、架橋修飾前後の化学変化を分析した。Bruker FTIR分光計(VERTEX 70/70v)を用い、400~4000cm-1の範囲にわたり減衰全反射(ATR)モードを適用して、各サンプルに合計64回のスキャンを行った。修飾前後のPBI膜の表面化学を更に調査するため、Kratos AXIS UltraDLD(Kratos Analytical Ltd.、UK)を用いてX線光電子分光法(XPS)を遂行した。膜の親水性は、接触角測角器(Rame Hart、USA)を用いて乾燥させた膜の静的水接触角を測定することにより調査した。各サンプルについて異なる場所で10回を超える測定を行い、平均値を得た。
DMAc中での架橋PBI膜の化学的安定性を評価するため、不織布、NX-PBI、及びX-PBI膜を数片、真空乾燥し、計量した。浸漬前、各不織サンプルは約60mgであり、一方、NX-PBI及びX-PBIサンプルは、約80mgであった。サンプルを別々に室温で1週間、撹拌しながらDMAc50mlに浸した。続いて、サンプルをDMAcから取り出し、DI水で洗浄し、真空下で一晩乾燥させた。その後、これらの重量を測定し、その初期値と比較した。ゲル含有率のパーセンテージは、DMAc中での膜の安定性を示す。また、DMAcに溶解した分のPBIのUV吸収スペクトルを、UV-Vis分光計(Pharo300、Merck)を用いて、記録した。
電界放出走査型電子顕微鏡(FESEM、JEOL JSM-6700F)を採用して、膜の上面と断面の形態を調べた。まず、膜を脱イオン(DI)水で数回すすぎ、冷蔵庫で5時間凍結させ、次いで凍結乾燥機(S61-Modulyo-D、Thermo Electron Corp.)を用いて24時間乾燥させた。続いて、凍結乾燥させた膜を液体窒素に浸漬し、破砕し、次いで、イオンスパッタリング装置(JEOLJFC-1300)を用いて白金でコーティングした。原子間力顕微鏡法(AFM、Bruker Dimension ICON)を用い、室温でタッピングモード(音響AC)で膜表面のトポロジーの特性評価を行った。各サンプルについて、5×5μmの領域を1Hzの速度でスキャンした。次いで、スキャンした結果を、NanoScope Analysis(バージョン1.5)を用いて分析した。得られた平均粗さ(Ra)を用いて、表面粗さを定量化した。
純粋な溶媒、濃度50ppmの様々なモデル溶質/IPA溶液、及びL-α-レシチン/ヘキサン溶液(2g/L)をOSN試験に使用した。実験は全て、ステンレス鋼デッドエンド型透過セルにおいて、撹拌速度600rpm、膜間圧10barで行った。透過度(Ps; LMH/bar)を下記の等式から得た:
(i)化学分析
図2は、22℃の無水2-MeTHFにおけるPBIとTMCとの架橋反応を示す。TMCの塩化アシル基がPBIのイミダゾール環上の第2級アミンと反応して第3級アミド基を形成し、その結果、PBI鎖を架橋する。
図4は、サンプルからDMAcに溶解した分のUV吸収スペクトル、ならびにDMAに1週間浸した後の不織布、NX-PBI、及びX-PBIサンプルのゲル含有率を示す。これらのUV吸収スペクトルは、不織布サンプルはDMAc中で完全に安定であるが、非架橋PBI(NX-PBI)膜は、完全に溶解することを実証している。TMC修飾膜(X-PBI)は、DMAc中で非常に優れた安定性を示しており、ゲル含有率はおよそ94%である。明らかに、TMCは、PBI膜を架橋させ、元の溶媒(即ち、DMAc)に対して強い耐性を持たせるのに効果的な薬剤である。
図5は、非架橋PBI(NX-PBI)ならびに架橋PBI(X0-PBI及びX-PBI)膜の断面及び上面のFESEM画像を示す。膜は全て、比較的緻密な選択的上層と、マクロボイドが多い高度に多孔質の副層からなる同様の構造を呈している。これにより、膜は、適度な選択性を有する透過度の高いものとなっている。架橋修飾後、PBI膜の断面に明確な変化はないが、架橋膜(X0-PBI及びX-PBI)の上面は、より緻密になっていることがわかる。更に、架橋膜は、修飾中の弛緩及び細孔サイズ減少のために、非架橋のものよりも表面が滑らかになっている。
(a)様々な溶媒透過度及び溶質除去率
極性及び非極性有機溶媒の両方におけるTMC架橋膜(X-PBI)のOSN性能を評価するため、MeCN、アセトン、EtOH、IPA、トルエン、及びヘキサンを比較用溶媒として選択した。図6(a)は、各溶媒の透過度を示す。
エネルギー消費の少ない母液のリサイクル及び医薬品の濃縮は、最も重要なOSNの用途の1つである。製薬産業における架橋PBI膜の潜在的用途を調査するため、テトラサイクリン/IPA溶液をろ過することによりX-PBI膜の試験を行った。図8は、テトラサイクリン/IPA供給物、架橋PBI(X-PBI)膜の第1及び第2の透過液のUV吸収スペクトルを示す。ろ過の第1の工程において、X-PBI膜によって90%を超えるテトラサイクリン分子が除去され、したがって、第1の透過液のテトラサイクリン濃度は、5ppm未満となった。第1の透過液を供給物として使用したろ過の第2の工程において、膜は、テトラサイクリン分子に対して97.81%という優れた除去率を示した。第1及び第2のろ過工程の透過度は、それぞれ1.87及び5.06LMH/barであり、分離性能に対する供給物の濃度の影響が大きいことを示した。この観察結果は、濃度分極と浸透圧の両方がOSNの分離性能を決定する上で重要な役割を果たすことが見出された以前の報告とよく一致していた。したがって、供給物の濃度が低ければ、高い除去率及び流束が観察されることになる。
食品産業におけるX-PBI膜の可能な用途を探求するため、一般的な食品添加物としてのL-α-レシチン2gをヘキサン1Lに溶解させ、X-PBI膜を通してろ過した。図9は、L-α-レシチン/ヘキサン供給物及び透過溶液のUV吸収スペクトルを示す。膜は、80.8LMH/barという高ヘキサン透過度で92%のL-α-レシチンを除去した。明らかに、X-PBI膜は、母液中のL-α-レシチンを濃縮し、ヘキサンの蒸発にかかるエネルギーコストを削減する潜在力がある。
X-PBI膜が形状選択的機能及び正確な分子篩特性を有することを証明するため、IPA中のNR(赤色)とRBB(青色)との混合物を用いて混合染料の分離を更に行った。暗色の供給物の色がオレンジ又は明るい赤となった。UV吸収スペクトルが、図10に示すように、RBBがほぼ完全に除去される一方で、NRは依然としてX-PBI膜を選択的に通過することを裏付けている。この注目に値する分離性能は、RBB(15.8×11.9Å)が3Dのかさばる構造を有するのに対し、NR(12.6×5.9Å)は、スリムな構造を有するという事実から生じるものである。結果として、RBBは十分にブロックされるが、直径が5.9Åの細いNR分子はX-PBI膜を通過する。したがって、X-PBI膜は、小分子を選択的に分離する潜在力を有し、染料分離、モノマー精製、溶質分画及び有機溶媒を伴う他の工業用途に使用することができる。
長期試験におけるOSN膜の耐久性は、実際の用途における重要な性能指数である。供給物として50ppmテトラサイクリン/IPA溶液を使用することにより、デッドエンドろ過モード下で96時間、X-PBI膜の試験を行った。図11は、結果を示す。特に、IPA透過度は、最初の6時間以内に急激に低下し、その後96時間までわずかに低下したが、テトラサイクリン除去率は、全96時間の間にわずかに上昇した。初期の透過度の低下は、溶質の捕捉による膜の圧密化、安定化及び/又は細孔の閉塞に起因することができる。最初の6時間後、膜透過度及び除去率はより安定する。定常のIPAの透過度及びテトラサイクリン除去率は、それぞれ1.36LMH/bar及び92.6%である。これらの結果は、本発明の膜が、その堅牢な構造及び適切な溶媒耐性から生じる並外れた分離性能を有し、実際のOSN用途に対して大きな潜在性を有することを示している。
様々な溶質と溶媒の分離に関するX-PBI膜と他のOSN膜との比較を表1に示す。X-PBI膜は、市販のOSN膜及び他の報告されているPBI膜と比較して、遙かに良好な透過度及び除去率を呈する。
本発明は、架橋ポリマーの膜を形成するための環境に優しい架橋方法を提供する。特に、トリメソイルクロリド(TMC)などの架橋剤を、2-メチルテトラヒドロフラン(2-MeTHF)などの溶媒と共に使用して、OSN用のポリベンゾイミダゾール(PBI)膜などの架橋ポリマー膜を作製することができる。
Claims (24)
- 架橋ポリマー膜を形成する方法であって、
- 少なくとも1つのイミダゾール環を含む少なくとも1種のポリマーから形成されるポリマー膜を用意すること;及び
- 少なくとも3つのハロゲン化アシル基を含む少なくとも1種の架橋剤を含む架橋溶液とポリマー膜を接触させて、架橋ポリマー膜を形成すること
を含む、方法。 - 前記少なくとも1種のポリマーが、ポリベンゾイミダゾール(PBI)である、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記少なくとも1種の架橋剤が、トリメソイルクロリド(TMC)である、請求項1又は2に記載の方法。
- 前記架橋溶液が、溶媒に溶解した少なくとも1種の架橋剤を含む、請求項1~3のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記溶媒が、2-メチルテトラヒドロフラン(2-MeTHF)、テトラヒドロフラン(THF)、シクロペンチルメチルエーテル(CPME)、又はそれらの混合物である、請求項4に記載の方法。
- 前記接触させることが、所定期間、所定温度で行われる、請求項1~5のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記所定温度が、10~40℃である、請求項6に記載の方法。
- 前記所定期間が、0.5~120時間である、請求項6又は7に記載の方法。
- 前記ポリマー膜が、フラットシート膜、中空繊維膜、管状膜、又は緻密膜である、請求項1~8のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記用意することの前に、少なくとも1種のポリマーを含むポリマー溶液からポリマー膜を形成することを更に含む、請求項1~9のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記ポリマー溶液が、少なくとも1種のポリマーを2~40%(重量/重量)含む、請求項10に記載の方法。
- 前記架橋溶液が、少なくとも1種の架橋剤を0.05~20%(重量/重量)含む、請求項1~11のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記架橋ポリマー膜が、1~1000μmの厚さを有する、請求項1~12のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 前記架橋ポリマー膜が、親水性である、請求項1~13のいずれかに記載の方法。
- 請求項1~14のいずれかに記載の方法で調製された、架橋ポリマー膜。
- 少なくとも3つのハロゲン化アシル基を含む架橋剤によって架橋されたポリマー膜を含む架橋ポリマー膜であって、ポリマー膜が、少なくとも1つのイミダゾール環を含むポリマーから形成された、架橋ポリマー膜。
- 少なくとも1種の前記架橋剤が、トリメソイルクロリド(TMC)である、請求項16に記載の架橋ポリマー膜。
- 前記ポリマーが、ポリベンゾイミダゾール(PBI)である、請求項16又は17に記載の架橋ポリマー膜。
- 前記ポリマー膜が、フラットシート膜、中空繊維膜、管状膜、又は緻密膜である、請求項16~18のいずれかに記載の架橋ポリマー膜。
