Description

本開示は、概して、ポリ(エチレンフラノエート)、特にポリ(エチレンフラノエート)フィルムによる水収着に関する。
ポリ(エチレン−2,5−フランジカルボキシレート)とも称されるポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)ポリエステルは、バイオ系源からPEFを合成できることが主な理由で、ポリ(エチレンテレフタレート)(PET)の代替の可能性があるものとして近年関心が高まってきている。一般に、PEFとPETとの物理的化学的挙動差は、従来のPET系用途でPEFを大規模に使用するうえでかなりの課題となっている。たとえば、標準的な商用グレードのポリ(エチレンテレフタレート)と比較して、PEFポリエステルは、多くの場合、より低い結晶化度を有し、より遅い速度で結晶化し、かつ絡合いの程度がより低い。

本開示は、特に、ポリ(エチレンテレフタレート)(PET)と対比してポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)の水収着性の比較を提供し、冷水収着によるPEFの新しい可塑化方法を実証する。本開示は、水収着の熱力学、すなわち「平衡収着」に関する第1部および水収着の速度論、すなわち「速度論的収着」に関する第2部の2つの節で提供される。以下の詳細な説明は例示的かつ解説的なものに過ぎず、限定されるものではないことを理解すべきである。
概要
アモルファスポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)およびアモルファスポリ(エチレンテレフタレート)(PET)の平衡水収着性を全水分活性範囲にわたり35℃で研究した。PEFは、PETの非極性フェニル環をPEFの極性フラン環で置き換えることにより、PETと比較して全濃度範囲にわたり平均で約1.8倍に大幅に増加した平衡水収着容量を呈する。両ポリエステルは、約0.6の活性まで二元収着を呈し、その後、可塑化の開始により両ポリエステルとも濃度対活性の顕著な上昇を生じる。3つの独立した収着測定技術間で優れた一致が観測されたことにより、報告データの一貫性チェックが提供された。15、25、35、および45℃で行われた収着測定は、両ポリエステルの水収着の有効エンタルピーの推定を可能にした。これは純水の凝縮エンタルピーに類似していた。本開示は、特に、構造がこれらの2つの重要なポリエステルの収着性および輸送性にどのように影響を及ぼすかを実証する。
液体の水および高活性の水蒸気との接触を含むバリヤー用途では、高分子材料の水の収着および輸送の挙動を理解することが重要である。湿分は、主にマトリックスの可塑化に起因して、かかるポリマーの機械的性質、熱的性質、およびバリヤー性にかなり有害な影響を及ぼしうる[1〜4]。最近の進歩により、石油系PETと比較して性能の向上を示す新しい生物源ポリエステルであるポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)の費用効果的な製造が可能になってきている[5]。現在、PETと比較したPEFの水収着性に関するデータは文献に存在しないが、PEFを全世界のポリエステル市場に参入できるようにする前に、これらの性質を詳細に理解することが必要である。
2.1 材料およびフィルム作製
ポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)およびポリ(エチレンテレフタレート)(PET)は両方とも、The Coca-Cola Companyにより提供されたものであり、本発明者らのこれまでの研究で検討した材料と同一である[11、12]。PEFおよびPETの両方の構造情報は表1に提供されている。先行研究で使用したのと同一の溶融プレス/クエンチ法を利用して収着試験用のアモルファスポリエステルフィルムを作製した[11]。すべての収着試験で脱イオン水を使用した。また、自動収着システムで利用した窒素(UHPグレード)キャリヤーガスは、Airgas(Radnor, PA)により提供されたものである。
両ポリエステルの重量法収着測定は、TA VTI-SA+自動蒸気収着アナライザー(TA Instruments, New Castle, DE)を用いて0〜0.95の活性で記録した。このシステムは、2つの個別のマスフローコントローラーにより制御された個別の湿潤ストリームおよび乾燥ストリームを混合することにより加湿窒素ストリームを提供する。得られた加湿ストリームは露点アナライザーを貫流し、露点アナライザーはストリームの含水率を連続測定して装置にフィードバックを行うことにより自動制御を可能にする。露点アナライザーから出た後、加湿ストリームは、高感度マイクログラム天秤(確度±0.1%)に装着されたポリマーサンプル入り石英バスケットを通過する。所与の活性で質量取込みが平衡に達したら、システムはその次のプログラムされた活性段階に自動で進む。指定の時間間隔にわたる質量取込みが閾値限界、たとえば、99分間で0.0015%の質量変化を下回った場合、平衡が実現されている。非フィック緩和から生じる水取込みの漸増が長期にわたるため、両ポリエステルとも高い活性で多くの平衡化間隔が必要であった。収着の開始前に一定質量が達成されるまで、約160ミクロンの近似厚さを有するフィルムサンプルを45℃の装置内で初期乾燥させた。インターバル収着測定は、0.95の最終値と共に0.1の増分で0〜0.9の範囲内の水分活性を用いて記録した。収着および脱着の両方のインターバル測定を全活性範囲にわたり記録し、続いて、第2のセットのインターバル収着および脱着測定を0.3、0.6、および0.95の活性で記録した。長期にわたる非フィック緩和の存在により、0.7〜0.95の収着値間の真の平衡質量取込みの達成が妨害されたが、本開示のこの部および第2部で後に示されるように、この二次効果の全体的影響は無視しうると思われる[14]。
3.1 35℃での初期収着
ガラス状ポリマーの蒸気収着は、多くの場合、低い活性では二元収着により特徴付けられ、式1の二元モデル[21]により記述可能である。かかるデータは、透過物圧力に対する濃度で凹部を呈し、ガラス状ポリマーでの非凝縮性ガス(すなわち、酸素[12]および窒素[22])の二元収着挙動に類似している。

高い蒸気活性での二元収着またはヘンリーの法則の収着からの正の偏りは、ポリマーマトリックス内の透過物の非ランダム分布である単純膨張またはクラスター化の指標となりうる[34、45]。溶解度の上昇が同時に拡散係数の増加を伴ってセグメント移動性の増加の証拠となる場合、可塑化が示唆される。代替的に、溶解度の上昇が拡散水の有効直径の増加(すなわち、水分子が一緒になってクラスター化する)の結果として拡散係数の減少を伴う場合、クラスター化の指標となる[35]。可塑化は高い活性で透過率の増加を生じ、一方、クラスター化は活性を増加させても程度の差はあるが一定した透過率を呈するため、2つの現象を区別するために透過実験を使用することも可能である。可塑化[45〜48]およびクラスター化[28、34〜36、49〜52]の現象は両方とも、広範にわたる透過物およびポリマーで報告されてきた。

は、過剰の単一孤立透過物分子中のクラスター透過物分子の数を表す。したがって、このパラメーターは、高い活性では典型的にはゼロではなく、かつ低い活性ではほぼ0でありクラスター化はあまり見られない。以上に述べたように、クラスター化および可塑化の現象は両方とも、高い活性で溶解度の上昇を呈する。式6を用いれば、
のゼロを超える値により示唆される理想からの逸脱および可塑化またはクラスター化の開始を検出することが可能である。図2の両ポリエステルの収着データへの式6の適用は、図5に提供されている。
収着ヒステリシスは、透過物の収着サイクルおよび後続の脱着サイクルが重ならない場合に起こり、多種多様な透過物−材料の組合せで起こりうる[71〜73]。種々の研究によりヒステリシス挙動がポリマーマトリックスの膨張に関連付けられており、この場合、鎖は不可逆的に緩和して高い濃度で追加の透過物を組み込む[18、32、39、74、75]。この膨張により誘起される時間に依存する非フィック緩和を第2部で高い水蒸気活性で直接観測した([14]の図4および5を参照されたい)。

PEFおよびPETで得られた
値は、それぞれ27.5±5.6cm3/molおよび26.9±6.3cm3/molであり、両方とも純粋な液体の水のモル体積(約18cm3/mol)よりも大きい。かかる外見上の異常挙動は、次の3つの可能性により説明可能である。1)ポリマーマトリックスにおける高い活性での可塑化により実際上水分子により占有されていない追加の自由体積が形成され、その結果、系に添加された水の真の量と比較してポリマー/水「混合物」に不均衡な体積変化を生じるか、2)厚さ測定が
の真の値を推定するのに十分な程度に正確でないか、または3)両ポリエステルを等方性媒質であるとする仮定が不正確である。両ポリエステルの
値で報告された不確実性限界が大きいため、おそらくオプション2が現実を反映していると考えられる。したがって、膨張測定を行うのにより適したエリプソメトリーまたは他の技術を用いて、両ポリエステルに対して表3に報告されたデータを検証すべきである。
35℃での平衡収着測定の他に、両ポリエステルにおいて0.2の活性かつ15、25、および45℃で水の取込み値も測定した。0.1〜0.2の活性間で速度論的取込みデータを第2部で考察する[14]。第2部ではまた、PEFおよびPETにおける水に対して拡散の活性化エネルギーおよび透過の活性化エネルギーの推定値を報告する。適用される二元挙動を保証するためにかつ高い活性で図2で観測される濃度の上昇を回避するために、バージンフィルムを用いて0.2の活性で測定を記録した。式9のファントホッフ関係式は、平衡取込みデータの温度依存性を記述可能である。式中、ΔHSは収着の有効エンタルピー(kJ/mol)であり、Rは普遍気体定数であり、かつS0は前指数因子である。0.2の活性かつ15、25、35、および45℃での取込みデータは、PEF(菱形)およびPET(丸)に対して図8にプロットされており、ラインは式9によるそれぞれのモデルの当てはめを表す。図8に示されるΔHS値の不確実性限界は、モデルの当てはめの標準誤差に由来する。
本開示では、第2部で報告された対応する速度論的取込みデータと共に、全水分活性範囲にわたり35℃でアモルファスPEFおよびPETの平衡水取込み性を調べる[14]。次の活性範囲および技術を用いて、すなわち、1)0〜0.6の活性およびマクベイン石英スプリング技術を用いて、2)0〜0.95の活性および自動TA VTI−SA+収着装置を用いて、ならびに3)マイクログラム天秤を用いて水取込みを決定しつつ単位活性で液体の水に浸漬されたサンプルを用いて、水収着値を測定した。3つの独立した方法のすべてで測定された取込みデータの優れた一致により一貫性チェックを提供した。

アモルファスポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)およびポリ(エチレンテレフタレート)(PET)の水拡散係数を全水分活性範囲にわたり35℃で研究した。PEFは、PETと比較して全濃度間隔にわたり約1/5の平均拡散係数を呈する。両ポリエステルにおいて約0.6の活性までフィックの水拡散が観測され、その後、ベーレンス・ホッフェンバーグモデリングフレームワークを用いて非フィック緩和の存在を処理する必要があった。拡散係数と水分濃度増加との間の正の相関により実証されるように、高い活性での透過物による可塑化がPEFおよびPETの両方で見出された。15、25、35、および45℃で測定された拡散係数のアレニウス解釈により、PEFおよびPETの拡散の活性化エネルギーを計算可能であり、それぞれ47.1±2.8kJ/molおよび46.4±3.0kJ/molであり類似していた。本開示は、両ポリエステルにおける平衡水収着性に関する先行研究をさらに進め、続いて、これらの材料で水拡散プロセスの詳細な研究を提供する。
ほとんどのポリマーはその可使寿命のある時点で実際に湿潤環境に遭遇するであろうことから、高分子材料で水輸送を含む研究は重要である。水は、単位活性で多種多様なポリマーで望ましくない可塑化効果および膨張効果を引き起こしうるため、かかる輸送データは、液体の水に直接接触する材料で特に重要である[1〜4]。
6.1 材料および収着測定
バージンポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)およびポリ(エチレンテレフタレート)(PET)は、The Coca-Cola Companyにより提供されたものであり、これまでの研究で特徴付けられている[5、15、16]。両ポリエステルの繰返し構造を表4に示す。先行研究[5]に記載のものと同一の溶融プレス/クエンチ法を用いて、アモルファスフィルムを作製した。TA-VTI SA+収着装置で窒素キャリヤーガス(Airgas, Radnor PA)を利用し、すべての収着実験で脱イオン水を使用した。
自動TA VTI-SA+蒸気収着アナライザー(TA Instruments, New Castle, DE)を用いて両ポリエステルに対して収着時および後続の脱着時に0〜0.95の活性で水取込みデータを測定した。この系では、所望の蒸気濃度は、2つの個別のマスフローコントローラーを介して装置により自動制御される個別の湿潤窒素ストリームと乾燥窒素ストリームとを混合することにより得られる。断続的にストリームの含水率を測定する露点アナライザーから装置にフィードバックを提供する。マイクログラム天秤によりサンプル質量を定常的にモニターし、その後、質量の変化が時間に対して観測されないときに平衡が実現される。この技術に関するさらなる詳細は本開示の第1部[15]に提供されている。
7.1 拡散モデルの開発
重量測定水収着値は、典型的には重量パーセント単位の水(wt%、gH2O/g乾燥ポリマー)で報告されるが、式10により速度論的情報の抽出に有用な無次元形に変換可能である。
低い活性で手動石英スプリング装置により測定された両ポリエステルの水取込みデータは、式11による単純フィックモデルにより正確に記述可能である。図9にはPEF(菱形)およびPET(丸)における35℃での水蒸気の石英スプリングデータ例が提供されており、同一のグラフ上に無次元時間(DAvgt/l2)1/2を用いて規格化したものがプロットされている。図9の実線は式11によるモデルの当てはめを表す。35℃で液体の水で行われた測定でも式11と取込みデータとの間に類似の一致が観測された。これについては第7.3節で後に考察する。両ポリエステルで石英スプリング法により得られた拡散係数は、追加情報に提供されており、自動VTIシステムにより得られた値との優れた一致を呈する。

図14(PEF)および15(PET)に報告されたDAvgの値は、初期収着時(黒丸)および後続の脱着時(白丸)のものである。平衡取込みヒステリシスは本開示の第1部に詳述され、そこには収着誘起モルフォロジー変化の存続性を調べるために第2の収着サイクルのデータが含まれていたことを想起されたい([15]の図6および7を参照されたい)。次に、35℃での第2の収着サイクル時の平衡データに対応する速度論的挙動を提示する。
35℃での以上の測定の他に、15、25、および45℃で0.1〜0.2の活性間隔で両ポリエステルに対して速度論的取込み曲線も測定した。4つのすべての温度に対して0.2の活性での平衡取込みデータが第1部[15]に提示され、そこには両ポリエステルにおける水収着のエンタルピーの推定値も報告されている。単純フィック拡散(ΦF=1)を保証するためにかつゼロから始まる収着間隔に関連した大きいτS値(すでに考察した)を回避するために、0.1〜0.2の活性で測定を行った。得られた速度論的取込み曲線はフィック型が支配的であり、それに対応して図20に報告されたものに一致する小さいτS値を有していた。拡散係数の温度依存性は式20のアレニウス表現により記述可能である[52]。式中、EDは拡散の活性化エネルギー(kJ/mol)であり、Rは普遍気体定数であり、かつD0は前指数因子である。15、25、35、および45℃で測定されたDAvgの値は、PEF(菱形)およびPET(丸)の両方に対して図24に片対数形式でプロットされている。ラインは、対応する式20による当てはめを表し、EDの不確実性限界は、モデルの当てはめの標準誤差から得られる。

35℃で水収着時に得られた拡散係数は、PEF(菱形)およびPET(丸)に対して自動VTIシステム(黒印点)および手動石英スプリングシステム(白印)により測定されて図25に提供されている。図25のDAvg値は収着間隔の中点にプロットされ、2つの独立した方法間で一致を呈する。
ガラス状ポリマーにおける低い活性の蒸気の拡散は、多くの場合、ラングミュア微小空隙と比較してヘンリーの法則の環境で収着される透過物に対して異なる移動性が存在すると仮定する部分不動化モデル(PIM)を用いて記述可能である[4、5]。離散間隔にわたり平均される拡散係数のPIM表現は式S3で与えられる[6〜8]。式中、DDはヘンリーの法則の環境に対する拡散係数であり、Fはヘンリーの法則の環境と比較してラングミュア微小空隙の透過物の移動性の差であり(DH/DD)、pは間隔の開始(下付き文字1)および間隔の終了(下付き文字2)における圧力であり、bはラングミュア親和性パラメーターであり、かつK=CH’b/kDである。

Claims (16)
- 薄いポリ(エチレンフラノエート)フィルムを作製する方法であって、
a)ポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)フィルムを提供する工程と、
b)前記PEFフィルムと(1)水または(2)高(>50%)相対湿度の空気とをある期間にわたり周囲温度以下の温度で接触させることで前記PEFフィルムを可塑化する工程と、
c)前記可塑化PEFフィルムをPEF線形粘弾性範囲内の動的歪み振動に付す工程と
を含む方法。 - 前記PEFフィルムが少なくとも約90%の相対湿度の空気と約1h〜約25hの期間にわたり周囲温度以下の温度で接触される、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記PEFフィルムが少なくとも約95%の相対湿度の空気と約0.5h〜約50hの期間にわたり周囲温度以下の温度で接触される、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記PEFフィルムが水と約0.5h〜約25hの期間にわたり周囲温度以下の温度で接触される、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 請求項1〜4のいずれか一項に記載の方法に従って作製された薄いポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)フィルム。
- 前記PEFフィルムが少なくとも約90%の相対湿度の空気と約1h〜約40hの期間にわたり周囲温度以下の温度で接触される、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記PEFフィルムが水と約0.25h〜約25hの期間にわたり周囲温度以下の温度で接触される、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 請求項6又は7に記載の方法に従って作製された薄いポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)フィルム。
- 薄いポリ(エチレンフラノエート)フィルムを作製する方法であって、
a)ポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)フィルムを提供する工程と、
b)前記PEFフィルムと(1)水または(2)高(>50%)相対湿度の空気とをある期間にわたり周囲温度以上の温度で接触させることで前記PEFフィルムを可塑化する工程と、
c)前記可塑化PEFフィルムをPEF線形粘弾性範囲内の動的歪み振動に付す工程と
を含む方法。 - 前記PEFフィルムが少なくとも約90%の相対湿度の空気と約1h〜約25hの期間にわたり周囲温度以上の温度で接触される、請求項9に記載の方法。
- 前記PEFフィルムが少なくとも約95%の相対湿度の空気と約0.5h〜約50hの期間にわたり周囲温度以上の温度で接触される、請求項9に記載の方法。
- 前記PEFフィルムが水と約0.5h〜約25hの期間にわたり周囲温度以上の温度で接触される、請求項9に記載の方法。
- 請求項9〜12のいずれか一項に記載の方法に従って作製された薄いポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)フィルム。
- 前記PEFフィルムが少なくとも約90%の相対湿度の空気と約1h〜約40hの期間にわたり周囲温度以上の温度で接触される、請求項9に記載の方法。
- 前記PEFフィルムが水と約0.25h〜約25hの期間にわたり周囲温度以上の温度で接触される、請求項9に記載の方法。
- 請求項14又は15に記載の方法に従って作製された薄いポリ(エチレンフラノエート)(PEF)フィルム。
