Description
The present invention relates to a technique suitable for application to a printing system and a printing method.
Due to the spread of networks, information systems installed in offices are required to improve business efficiency and ensure security.
The same applies to printers.
In the past, enhancement of the functions of a single printer was an element of competition, but now the entire system is required to solve problems related to printing. It is a system introduction form called “solution” of information system. It is difficult to differentiate products by simply providing printers.
With the introduction of a plurality of printers connected to a network in a vast office, the problem of information leakage via printed materials is becoming apparent. In other words, because the printer now accepts the print output of many employees, the confidential information described in the printed matter output by one employee is often seen by other unintended employees. .
On the other hand, in Europe and the United States, printers are often installed outside the office floor. For this reason, the problem of information leakage via printed matter has been recognized from an early stage. In Europe and the United States, a method for outputting printed matter by a printer called “on-demand printing” has become widespread.
An example of an information system including a printer is shown in
In recent years, in order to maintain and improve the security of information systems, examples of introducing thin clients in place of conventional personal computers are emerging.
A thin client is literally a “thin client”, that is, a terminal device that has a simplified processing capability compared to a conventional personal computer. Even if the OS is loaded from the server via the network and booted without having a hard disk or the like and logged in from any thin client, the environment of the logged-in user is reproduced.
In the case of the above-described system in which the thin client is introduced, the user can work equally regardless of which terminal device is used.
具体的には、プリンタのIPアドレス或はFQDN(Fully Qualified Domain Name:TCP/IPネットワーク上で、ドメイン名・サブドメイン名・ホスト名を省略せずにすべて指定した記述形式。)
Usually, in order to perform printing from a personal computer or a thin client, a printer to be printed is registered in a printer driver of the user's environment (OS). Specifically, the printer's IP address or FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name: a description format in which the domain name, subdomain name, and host name are all specified on the TCP / IP network) and print data. Register the protocol to be used when sending.
Once this information is registered, printing can be performed only from the registered printer.
Therefore, for example, when a thin client is used by moving from place to place, or a notebook PC or the like is carried around and work is performed at the destination, printing is performed on a printer that is not expected by the user. May occur.

Embodiments of the present invention will be described below.
Prior to the description of this embodiment with illustration, the outline of this embodiment will be described.
The present embodiment is an on-demand printing system.
In general, the term “on-demand printing” seems to refer to printing with a short number of copies and a short delivery time without using a composition. However, as far as this specification is concerned, “on-demand printing” is defined as “a printing technique that can be printed only after the user performs a predetermined operation on the printer”. This is because the term “on demand” means “a method of providing a service when a user requests it” in the information system industry.
The on-demand printing system described in the present embodiment, for example, allows a printer in an office in a business trip destination to be changed without changing any settings of a notebook PC that is normally used even when a corporate user makes a business trip to an affiliated branch office. It is a system that can be used for printing.
Usually, when printing a predetermined document or the like from a personal computer, the printer to be printed is fixed by the setting of a printer driver in the personal computer. For this reason, conventionally, even if the personal computer is brought to a business trip destination without changing the setting, if the setting of the printer driver is not changed, the print data is output to the printer that is usually used.
To change printer driver settings, OS administrator authority is required. In many companies, only the network administrator can change the setting, which is very complicated.
In this embodiment, the system is configured so that printing can be executed by a printer at a branch office at a business trip destination.
In this embodiment, what is described as “printer” is not only a single-function printer (image forming apparatus) but also a “multi-function printer (MFP) having functions of a copying machine, a facsimile, a scanner device, and the like. Printer) ”.

この設定内容の一例としては、例えばLPR(Line PRinter daemon protocol:TCP/IPネットワークを経由して印刷を行うプロトコル。)

In this embodiment, an authentication server 106 that uses LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol: a protocol for accessing a directory database in a TCP / IP network) for user authentication is used. In this relationship, “HOSTLOGINNAME” is used among the PJL setting items registered in the index server 105 described later.
Although “USERID” and “JOBPASSWORD” are registered in the index server 105, these items are not substantially used in the present embodiment. These items are used in an authentication method that does not use the authentication server 106, and details will be described later.

The printer A 102 and the printer B 103 are printers having substantially the same function. The internal function is expressed as a printer 501.
The printer 501 incorporates computer hardware, and an OS conforming to POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX (registered trademark)) stored in a nonvolatile storage (not shown) is installed in the printer 501. It comes to work. The blocks shown in FIG. 5 are functions of a program that runs on this OS except for a part.

When the printer 501 functions as the second printer, it does not receive print data from the client PC, but downloads the print data from the printer that holds the print data and performs printing.

webサーバプログラム702は、TCP/IPネットワーク503を通じて来るクライアントの要求に応じ、html文書を送信したり、cgi(Common Gateway Interface:webサーバがwebブラウザの要求に応じて、プログラムを起動するための仕組み。)

When the printer transmits an index record to the index server 105, the
The values contained in the index record are stored in each field of the index table 706 as follows:
The window title of the printed application stored in the PJL variable “JOBNAME” is stored in the “JOB_NAME” field.
An arbitrary user ID set in the printer driver stored in the PJL variable “USERID” is stored in the “USER_ID” field.
An arbitrary password set in the printer driver and stored in the PJL variable “JOBPASSWORD” is stored in the “JOB_PASSWORD” field.
The user ID of the user logged in to the OS stored in the PJL variable “HOSTLOGINNAME” is stored in the “HOST_LOGIN_NAME” field.
The URL of the print data is stored in the “URL” field.

The main points of the above operation will be described below.
The on-demand printing system 101 according to this embodiment causes print data to remain in each printer. Then, the print data is downloaded from the printer that has the print data from the printer that wants to print, and the print data is printed.
Conventionally, when constructing a system for “printing anywhere”, a spool server for managing print data intensively has been installed. Since a large amount of print data is concentrated on the spool server, a high-speed and large-capacity server must be prepared as necessary hardware when constructing the spool server. Such a system construction is expensive and increases network traffic. Also, if the spool server goes down, all computers on the network cannot print.
In the present embodiment, since the index server 105 only needs to manage the URL indicating the location of the print data, even the extremely light and simple hardware can be realized sufficiently, and the traffic is also small. Since print data is not concentrated in one place, network traffic is reduced. In addition, even if a printer that you normally use breaks down, you can print without any problems by simply switching the settings to another printer.
特にページプリンタにおけるこのような仕様を、PDL(Page Description Language:ページ記述言語)という。
By the way, in this embodiment, the printer needs certain conditions. That is, a printer on the network can normally print the print data generated by the client PC. Taking FIG. 1 as an example, both the printer A 102 and the printer B 103 must have the ability to normally print the print data generated by the client PC 104.
In many cases, printers have different print data specifications for each manufacturer and model. In particular, such specifications for page printers are called PDL (Page Description Language). It is also called a printer language. This needs to be available to all printers on the network. For this purpose, it is necessary that the printers satisfy the same PDL specification, or a printer having a PDL emulation function of another company or another model.

FIG. 22 is an overall configuration diagram of an on-demand printing system, which is an example of the second embodiment.
The on-demand printing system 2201 of this embodiment requires the following devices.
(1) A printer C2202 that can be said to be a first printer.
(2) A printer D2203 which can be said to be a second printer.
(3) The first client PC 2204.
(4) Index server 2205.
(5) The second client PC 2206.
(6) A network connecting (1) to (5).
Compared with FIG. 1, the on-demand printing system 2201 of FIG. 22 has the following differences from the appearance of the system configuration.
-There is no authentication server.
This is because the significance of the existence of user authentication in the present invention is due to the necessity of ensuring the security of the network system. That is, if the network system itself is sufficiently safe, such as when the number of users using the network is small, the user authentication function is not essential.
-There are two client PCs.
The first client PC 2204 can be said to be a print data generation unit, and is not different from the client PC 104 in FIG. 3 at all.
The second client PC 2206 is obtained by realizing the
The second client PC 2206 displays a display screen similar to the display screen 1001 of FIG. 10 on a display unit such as an LCD. Then, a print command including the URL of the print data is transmitted (issued) to the printer that wants to execute printing. The printer that has received the print command downloads the print data according to the URL and prints it.
For this purpose, the second client PC 2206 is installed at a location relatively close to the printer D2203.
Of course, the second client PC 2206 can be integrated with the first client PC 2204.
That is, the print data generation function included in the client PC 104 of FIG. 3 and the function of the second client PC 2206 shown in FIG. 25 to be described later can both be included in a single personal computer.
In this case, regardless of where the client PC is located on the network, the created print data is transmitted to the first printer, and a print command is issued to a nearby printer.
There are various methods for the second client PC 2206 to find the address of the printer at hand.
The simplest method is a method in which the user inputs manually. However, this is not convenient.
周知のping(Packet INternet Groper:TCP/IPネットワーク上のホストの存在を診断するプログラム、又はそのプロトコル。)
As a next best measure, there is a method of searching for the presence of a printer in all IP addresses in the same subnet to which the IP address assigned to the second client PC 2206 belongs.
Using a well-known ping (Packet Internet Groper: a program for diagnosing the presence of a host on a TCP / IP network, or its protocol), pings are sequentially performed on IP addresses in the same subnet, and the presence of the host Confirm. For the IP address for which there was a ping response, that is, the existence of which was confirmed, a SYN packet (a packet requesting the start of TCP communication) is further sent to the
A method of storing a list of printer IP addresses in the index server 2205 and selecting it is also conceivable.
For example, a web application using cgi is constructed in the index server 2205. Then, a web browser is operated on the second client PC 2206, and the index server 2205 is accessed to select a printer, select print data, and issue a print command to a desired printer.
FIG. 23 is a block diagram of a printer C2202 that is the first printer. Since the user interface portion is provided in the second client PC 2206, only the minimum necessary functions are provided.
The functional blocks of the printer C2202 are configured only with substantially the same components as the printer 501 of FIG. That is, the
In terms of functional blocks, the printer C2202 differs from the printer 501 in that the print data reception unit 2202 and the print data acquisition unit 2232 omit the GPS filter by monitoring different port numbers. . That is, the determination processing in the

Also in the second embodiment described above, substantially the same operation as in the first embodiment is performed.
The second embodiment is practical in a small-scale network environment in which an employee does not have an IC card.
The following application examples are conceivable for the present embodiment described above.
(1) An authentication server (LDAP server) is not necessarily required for user authentication. The search function itself of the index server 105 may include a user authentication function.
The printer driver has a function for recording and holding an ID and a password. These are stored in PJL variables “USERID” and “JOBPASSPASSWORD”.
In the second embodiment, the user operates the second client PC 2206 to input “USERID” and “JOBPASSWORD”, and causes the index server 105 to perform a search with a predetermined ID and password.
The index server 105 returns to the printer only about the record whose ID and password match.
In this case, although it is not explicit authentication, the search function also serves as user authentication.
(2) The protocol for transmitting and receiving print data is not limited to the above-described embodiment.
Various forms such as FTP and SSH, which are derived from SSH, and SFTP are conceivable.
(3) The user authentication mechanism is not limited to the above-described embodiment. All printers can have a common user table.
(4) In the above embodiment, HTTP is used for access between printers, but BASIC authentication used at this time is not necessarily required. As long as file names and directory names having a configuration that does not allow directory listing display and cannot be easily inferred are attached to the URL, BASIC authentication is not necessary. Whether or not to use such authentication is a problem in system operation mainly considering security.
(5) The IP address is not limited to a private IP.
A global IP address may be used as long as predetermined security is satisfied.
This is not limited to the current IPv4 but is the same in IPv6.
(6) The index server 105 and the authentication server 106 can be constructed and integrated on a single server.
(7) The index server 105 and the authentication server 106 can be integrated with printer firmware.
FIG. 26 shows an example of this. FIG. 26 is a functional block diagram of a printer including the function of the index server.
The printer 2601 includes both the components of the printer 501 and the components of the index server 105.
(8) The index server 105 does not necessarily need to be a web server. The index server 105 is configured by an SQL server, and the printer directly generates an SQL query (query: a character string of a processing request (query) to the database management system) and transmits the query to the index server 105. Good.
In the present embodiment, an on-demand printing system has been disclosed.
In this embodiment, for the purpose of “printing anywhere”, print data is held in a printer, and the printer itself has a server function.
According to this embodiment, the user can print on any printer as long as it is a printer that satisfies a predetermined function in a company, that is, within a predetermined network.
The on-demand printing system of the present embodiment does not have to have a very high processing capacity of the installed server when realizing this function as compared to the conventional system. Even extremely light and simple hardware can be realized sufficiently. Therefore, the capital investment is low.
Further, since the flow of print data is not concentrated, network traffic is reduced as compared with the conventional system.
Furthermore, even if the printer that you normally use breaks down, you can print without any problems by switching the settings to another printer.
The embodiment of the present invention has been described above.
