Description
The present invention relates to a light source control device and a video display device including a solid light source.
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, a video display device including a solid light source such as an LED (Light Emitting Diode) or an LD (Laser Diode) and a light modulation element that modulates light emitted from the solid light source is known (for example, Patent Document 1). . Here, when a current is supplied to the solid light source, the solid light source generates heat. As the ambient temperature of the solid light source increases, the amount of light emitted by the solid light source decreases.
In addition, in order to suppress a decrease in the amount of light due to heat generated by the solid light source, an image display device provided with a cooling element for cooling the solid light source has also been proposed (for example, Patent Document 2).
Here, taking an LED (light-emitting diode) light source as an example, it is known that the drive current-light quantity characteristic of the LED light source changes with a change in the environmental temperature of the LED light source.
For example, as shown in FIG. 3, the red LED has a characteristic that the amount of emitted light rises to a certain extent as the drive current increases, but the emitted amount of light decreases in the middle (hereinafter referred to as overroll). ). Further, even when the same drive current is applied, the red LED has a characteristic that the amount of emitted light is greatly reduced when the environmental temperature is high. Here, for example, T1 in the figure is room temperature (for example, 20 ° C.), T2 is a steady temperature when the light source is turned on (for example, 80 ° C.), and T3 is a temperature higher than the steady temperature. To do. That is, the relationship between environmental temperatures is T1 <T2 <T3.
However, in the prior art, since the drive current is controlled in units of a predetermined step width, the amount of light emitted from the solid-state light source may not quickly become the target amount of light. That is, as shown in FIG. 3, since the drive current-light quantity characteristic is affected by the environmental temperature of the solid light source, the increase amount of the drive current of the solid light source is set so that the light quantity emitted from the solid light source becomes the target light quantity. It is difficult to decide.
Therefore, the present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems, and an object thereof is to provide a light source control device and an image display device that can quickly set a light amount emitted from a solid light source as a target light amount. And
It is another object of the present invention to provide an image display apparatus that can improve the luminance of an image while suppressing loads imposed on a solid light source and a cooling element.
In one aspect of the present invention, the light source control device indicates a relationship between a light source driver that supplies a drive current to a solid light source, a light amount sensor that detects an emitted light amount of the solid light source, and the drive current and the emitted light amount. The light source control device includes storage means for holding characteristic information for each ambient temperature of the solid state light source, and control means for controlling the drive current supplied from the light source driver. The control means sends the characteristic information corresponding to the ambient temperature of the solid-state light source from the storage means according to the relationship between the drive current supplied from the light source driver and the emitted light quantity detected by the light quantity sensor. Based on the acquired characteristic information, the drive current is controlled so that the emitted light amount becomes a target light amount.
According to such a feature, the control unit acquires and acquires characteristic information corresponding to the ambient temperature of the solid-state light source according to the relationship between the drive current supplied from the light source driver and the amount of emitted light detected by the light amount sensor. Based on the obtained characteristic information (drive current-light quantity characteristic), the drive current is controlled so that the emitted light quantity becomes the target light quantity.
That is, since the drive current of the solid light source is controlled in a state where the characteristic information (drive current-light quantity characteristic) corresponding to the ambient temperature of the solid light source is grasped, the drive current is controlled so that the emitted light quantity becomes the target light quantity. Can be easily determined. Accordingly, the amount of light emitted from the solid light source can be quickly set as the target amount of light.
In the above-described feature of the present invention, the control means may include the characteristic information stored in the storage means when the characteristic information corresponding to the ambient temperature of the solid state light source is not stored in the storage means. The characteristic information corresponding to the environmental temperature close to the environmental temperature of the solid-state light source is specified, and the characteristic information corresponding to the environmental temperature of the solid-state light source is calculated based on the specified characteristic information. Preferably, the drive current is controlled based on the characteristic information so that the emitted light amount becomes a target light amount.
In the above-described feature of the present invention, the control means is supplied from the light source driver within a range that does not exceed a maximum drive current that is the drive current that maximizes the amount of emitted light in the acquired characteristic information. It is preferable to control the drive current.

When the control means controls the drive current of one solid-state light source included in the plurality of solid-state light sources to exceed the maximum drive current, white balance reproduced by the emitted light of the plurality of solid-state light sources is obtained. While maintaining, the drive current of the other solid-state light source included in the plurality of solid-state light sources is controlled.
In one aspect of the present invention, an image display device includes a solid light source (solid light source 110), a light modulation element (liquid crystal panel 150) that modulates light emitted from the solid light source, and a cooling element (cooling element) that cools the solid light source. A Peltier element 120), a signal receiving unit (video signal receiving unit 310) that receives a video signal that determines a modulation amount of the light modulation element, and the cooling element according to the video signal received by the signal receiving unit. A cooling power control unit (cooling power control unit 330) that controls the cooling power.
According to such a feature, the cooling power control unit controls the cooling power of the cooling element in accordance with the video signal received by the signal receiving unit, so that a high current is not continuously supplied to the cooling element, and the solid state The ambient temperature of the light source can be lowered appropriately. Therefore, it is possible to improve the luminance of the image as required without increasing the amount of current supplied to the solid light source.
That is, it is possible to improve the luminance of the image while suppressing the load imposed on the solid light source and the cooling element.

The solid-state light source is provided on the heat-absorbing surface, and a heat-dissipating member (heat sink 130) that releases heat transmitted to the heat-dissipating surface is provided on the heat-dissipating surface. Preferably it is.
In the above-described features of the present invention, the video display device includes a drive current control unit (drive current control unit 340) that controls the drive current of the solid light source, and a detection unit (temperature sensor 70) that detects the ambient temperature of the solid light source. And the cooling power control unit is configured to display a video whose luminance exceeds the predetermined threshold when the luminance of the video displayed according to the video signal exceeds the predetermined threshold. In addition, the cooling power of the cooling element is strengthened, and the driving current control unit reduces the driving current of the solid light source in conjunction with a decrease in the environmental temperature of the solid light source, and an image whose luminance exceeds the predetermined threshold value When displayed, it is preferable to increase the driving current of the solid state light source.

(1) Based on the current drive current value (C), the
(2) The
The
(3) The
As will be described repeatedly, in FIG. 3, the light amount L1 is a desired light amount, and the required drive current is C1 under the assumption of the steady temperature (T2) when the light source is turned on. At the start, the
If it is assumed that the temperature of the
The light source control described above may be performed for all the lighting devices 51 of the three primary colors. That is, depending on the constituent material of the LED, for example, the drive current-light quantity characteristic may change depending on the temperature or an overroll may occur for a blue LED or a green LED. By providing a drive current-light quantity characteristic data table for each color LED and performing light source control, the emitted light quantity of each color illumination device can be appropriately controlled.
In addition, the light source control according to the present invention is executed only for one or two color light sources in which the change in the drive current-light quantity characteristic due to temperature is large (and also has an overroll characteristic), and the drive current due to temperature -It is good also as performing simple feedback control (refer conventional clause) about the other light source whose change of light quantity characteristic is small (and it does not have an overroll characteristic). Note that setting the target light amount in each color light source and performing control to maintain these target light amounts means that white balance is maintained.
Further, when it is required to increase the amount of light further than the peak point of the amount of light in the driving current-light amount characteristic of a certain color light source (when such a video signal is input), other white balance is maintained. The driving current of the color light source may be limited. In other words, from the viewpoint of preventing current supply on the side beyond the peak point in the drive current-light quantity characteristic and maintaining white balance, white luminance is the peak in the drive current-light quantity characteristic of each color light source. You may perform control which receives the restriction | limiting of a point.
The
Here, when the light emission amount of the light source (LED) itself is controlled according to the video signal as described above, the temperature of the light source cannot maintain the steady temperature (T2) when the light source is turned on, and the temperature is on the time axis. It seems to change frequently. According to the present invention, even if the temperature of the light source changes frequently as described above, it is possible to quickly follow the light source and cause the light source to emit light with a target light amount.
In the above example, a three-plate projection type image display device is shown. However, a light source that emits white light (a light source having a white LED, or light from each color LED having different emission colors is used as a cross dichroic cube) The light source control of the present application can also be applied to a single-plate projection image display apparatus having a light source combined with a white light source or a three-plate projection image display apparatus that color-separates light from a white light source using, for example, a dichroic mirror. it can. Of course, the light valve that modulates the light is not limited to the transmissive liquid crystal panel, and a reflective liquid crystal panel may be used, or a light valve in which a large number of micromirrors are arranged may be used.
Further, since the
Further, the light quantity characteristic information with respect to the drive current of the light source under a plurality of temperatures may be a function expression of the drive current-light quantity characteristic in addition to the above-described drive current-light quantity characteristic database.
固体光源はLD(Laser Diode)であってもよいことは勿論である。 In the first embodiment, the LED is described as the solid light source, but the present invention is not limited to this. Of course, the solid-state light source may be an LD (Laser Diode).

FIG. 8 is a diagram illustrating an example of light emission characteristics of the solid-state light source 110 according to the second embodiment.
As shown in FIG. 8, the light output (light quantity) of the solid light source 110 depends on the environmental temperature (Tc) of the solid light source 110. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 9C, in the time zone corresponding to the frames f 3 to f 4 , compared to the time zones corresponding to the other frames (frame f 1 , frame f 2 and frame f 5 ), The amount of current supplied to the Peltier element 120 is large.

As shown in FIG. 13B, in the time zone corresponding to the frame f 3 (that is, before a predetermined interval before the time zone corresponding to the frame f 5 having high luminance), the luminance of the frame f 5 has a predetermined threshold value. The cooling power of the Peltier element 120 is controlled so that the ambient temperature (Tc) of the solid light source 110 is lowered.
As shown in FIG. 13C, the driving current of the solid light source 110 is controlled to decrease in conjunction with the environmental temperature (Tc) of the solid light source 110.
