Description

発明の背景
本発明は概して対話型ビデオ通信に関し、具体的には、視聴者により制御される、プログラミングガイド情報およびプログラミングの選択に関する。

発明の要旨
本発明によれば、ＴＶ視聴者リモートコントロールトランスミッタによって対話的に制御されるシステムは、現在あるいは将来のプログラミング情報を、視聴者の表示画面にアクセス可能な任意のチャネルに表示される通常プログラミングの上に重ねて表示する。チューナーは、複数のケーブルチャネルのＴＶ高周波あるいは最適な伝送信号を受け取り、これらのチャネルのうちの任意の選択されたチャネルの視聴者が使用可能な信号を、信号

１つの特に好適な実施形態では、視聴者が、プログラミング情報チャネルからチャネルを変えずに識別された特定のプログラムについて対話できるように、識別信号は、特に、通常プログラミング情報チャネル専用にされ得る。さらに、コンピュータに識別信号を送るかあるいはコンピュータから識別信号を受け取る必要がなくなるように、識別データを、通常プログラミング信号に組み込んでもよい。
従って、視聴者は、現在および将来のプログラミングの可用性に対する自動的な注意の喚起を受けることができ、且つ、現在見ているプログラミングを中断することなく、そのような現在および将来のプログラミングに関する様々なオプションを対話的に実行するよう選択することができる。

以下、本発明を好適な実施形態を用いて説明するが、これは本発明をその実施形態に限定することを意図したものではないことが理解される。むしろ、これは、添付の請求の範囲に規定される発明の精神および範囲内に含まれ得るすべての変形、変更および等価物を含むことを意図したものである。
発明の詳細な説明
まず図１を参照して、対話型特別イベントビデオ信号ナビゲーションシステムの構成要素を説明する。コマンド情報レシーバであって、好ましくは赤外あるいは高周波レシーバ１３を有するコンピュータ１１は、チューナー１７に制御信号１５を与え、ピクチャ画像信号１９または２０をデジタルビデオボード２１に与える。チューナー１７は、高周波あるいは最適な伝送を、視聴者が使用可能な信号に変換あるいは復調し、ケーブルソース（図示せず）からチューナー１７に入力される複数の通常プログラミング信号２５から選択された通常プログラミング信号２３を出力する。この複数の通常プログラミング信号は、典型的には、周波数分割多重化ビデオ、音声、およびデータ信号であって、同軸ケーブル、無線高周波、あるいは光ファイバを介して伝送される。チューナー１７はまた、ケーブルソース（図示せず）から、現在および将来のプログラミング識別信号２６および／または情報信号２８を受け取り、対応する現在および将来のプログラミング識別信号１６および／または情報信号１８を供給して、コンピュータ１１に格納する。識別信号１６は、情報信号１８の可用性に関するデータを含み、情報信号１８は、現在および将来のプログラミングに関するオプションとともに、視聴者による対話を記述するおよび／または促進するデータを含む。コンピュータ１１は、出力識別信号１６から格納されたデータのうちの選択された部分に、ときどき、あるいは、そのデータで規定される持続時間の間、自動的にアクセスし、対応するピクチャ画像信号１９を生成する。コンピュータ１１はまた、ＴＶ視聴者リモートコントロールトランスミッタ１３からコンピュータ１１に送られる複数の制御信号のうちの選択された制御信号に応答して、出力情報信号１８から格納されたデータのうちの選択された部分にアクセスし、ピクチャ画像信号２０を生成する。デジタルビデオボード２１は、コンピュータ１１からピクチャ画像信号１９または２０を受け取り、デジタルデータをビデオ信号２７に変換する。チューナー出力またはベースプログラミング信号２３は、ゲンロック信号結合器またはオーバーレイヤ（ｏｖｅｒｌａｙｅｒ）２９を用いて、デジタルビデオボード２１からのビデオ画像信号２７の上に重ねられている。その後、結合された信号３１は、視聴者のテレビの表示画面３３などのビデオ信号表示装置に表示される。視聴者は、リモートコントロールトランスミッタであって、好ましくは赤外または高周波トランスミッタ３５を用いてレシーバ１３にコマンドを送り、コンピュータ１１の動作を制御する。コンピュータ１１はマイクロプロセッサに基づくものであ
り、ランダムアクセスメモリ（ＲＡＭ）および／または読出し専用メモリ（ＲＯＭ）を使用し得る。マイクロプロセッサを動作させるために必要なソフトウェアは、デバイスに内蔵され得るか、あるいは、上で説明したように、ケーブルシステム（図示せず）を介しチューナー１７を通してコンピュータ１１にダウンロードされ得る。チューナー１７に与えられる識別信号２６および情報信号２８と、コンピュータ１１に与えられる対応する信号１６および１８は、１つまたは別個のパッケージで伝送され得る。
上述の対話型特別イベントビデオ信号ナビゲーションシステムの構成要素は、コンピュータ１１の制御に応答して動作する。図２に示されるように、一般家庭の視聴者が、チューナー１７による、入力選択２５からの任意の基本プログラム信号２３のゲンロック結合器２９への供給に応答してその視聴者のディスプレイ３３に与えられたプログラミングを見ている間、コンピュータ１１は、識別信号１６で受け取ったデータにより、「特別イベント」インジケータを視聴者のディスプレイ３３に現すよう自動的に促され得る。図３を参照して、特別イベントインジケータ１０１は、アイコン５１として、テキスト５３として、あるいは、アイコン５１とテキスト５３との組合せとして通常プログラミング５０の上に重ねられて視聴者のディスプレイ３３に現れ得る。アイコン５１および／またはテキスト５３が現れると、システムは、「リモートコントロールボタンを押した？」問い合わせ１０３に進み、視聴者が、リモートコントロール３５上のボタンを押すことによって特別イベントインジケータ１０１の存在に応答したかどうかを判断する。視聴者がリモートコントロール３５上のボタンを押していなければ、プログラムは、「表示時間満了？」オプション１０５に進む。このステップで、システムは、特別イベントインジケータ１０１が識別信号１６中のデータによって確立された最小期間の間表示されたかどうかについての問い合わせを行う。この問い合わせに対する答えが「イエス」であれば、ステップ１０７で、特別イベントインジケータ１０１が取り除かれ、視聴者のディスプレイ３３は、図８に示すように通常プログラミング５０だけの状態に戻る。「表示時間満了？」問い合わせ１０５に対する答えが「ノー」であれば、プログラムは「リモートコントロールボタンを押した？」問い合わせ１０３を通るように再経路付けされる。「リモートコントロールボタンを押した？」問い合わせ１０３に対する答えが「イエス」であれば、システムは次に、「視聴者が情報をリクエストしている？」問い合わせ１０９に進み、ここで、視聴者が特別イベントインジケータ１０１に関連するイベントについてのさらなる情報を得たいという意志を示すリモートコントロールボタンを押したかどうかを決定する。この問い合わせに対する答えが「ノー」であれば、システムは再び「表示時間満了？」問い合わせ１０５に進み、さらに、上で説明した処理を行う。「視聴者が情報をリクエストしている？」問い合わせ１０９に対する答えが「イエス」であれば、システムは「情報表示」状態１１１に進む。この状態では、視聴者ディスプレイ３３は、プログラム情報５５が通常プログラミング５０の上に重ねられた状態の表示を含む。図示しているように、情報５５は、視聴者が情報に記述されている特別イベントを注文したいと考えているのか、システムの動作をキャンセルしたいと考えているのかを尋ねる、視聴者へのプロンプトを含む。このプロンプトが表示された状態で、システムは、「視聴者が受け入れる？」オプション１１３に進み、ここで、視聴者は「申し込み」かあるいは「キャンセル」を選ぶことができる。リモートコントロール３５を用いることにより、「視聴者が受け入れる？」問い合わせ１１３に対する応答が「ノー」であれば、システムは、通常プログラミングステップ１０７に向けられ、視聴者のディスプレイ３３に通常プログラミング５０だけが現れる。「視聴者が受け入れる？」問い合わせ１１３に応答して、視聴者がリモートコントロール３５上の適切なボタンを操作して「イエス」を示すと、プログラムは「承認が必要？」問い合わせ１１５に進む。イベントがペイ・パー・ビューイベントである場合、コンピュータ１１に供給される情報信号１６を形成するデータには、価格設定および承認に関する情報が含まれている。「承認が必要？」問い合わせ１１５に対する答えが「イエス」であれば、図５に示しているように、視聴者ディスプレイ３３には、通常プログラミング５０とともに、その上に重ねられたペイ・パー・ビュー情報５７が含まれる。図示しているように、
ペイ・パー・ビュー情報５７は、プロセスの「視聴者が個人識別番号（ＰＩＮ）を入力」ステップ１１７で視聴者がリモートコントロール３５を用いてＰＩＮ番号を入力する機会を含み得る。「承認が必要？」問い合わせ１１５に対する答えが「ノー」であるか、あるいは、視聴者がステップ１１７で個人識別番号を入力すると、システムは、「現在あるいは将来のイベント？」問い合わせ１１９に進む。コンピュータに格納されたデータが、この問い合わせ１１９に対する答えが「現在」であることを示すと、システムは、「視聴者をイベントに合わせる」ステップ１２１に進み、もとの特別イベントインジケータ１０１で識別されたイベントだけが視聴者のディスプレイ３３に現れる。「現在あるいは将来のイベント？」問い合わせ１１９に対する応答が「将来」であれば、システムは情報表示ステップ１２２に進み、図６に示すように、プロンプト５９により、テープに記録したいかどうかが質問される。その後、システムは「テープに記録したい？」問い合わせ１２３に進む。視聴者が「テープに記録したい？」問い合わせ１２３に対しリモート３５を介して「ノー」の応答をすると、システムは「将来のイベント動作を格納する」ステップ１２５に進み、システムは、選択されたイベントを、スケジュールされた時間に自動的に表示する。「テープに記録したい？」問い合わせ１２３に対するリモート３５を介する応答が「イエス」であれば、システムは、「ＶＣＲテープ記録動作を格納する」ステップ１２７に進み、システムは、このステップから「将来のイベント動作を格納する」ステップ１２５にさらに進み、選択されたイベントのテープ記録も、そのイベントのスケジュールされた時間に自動的に開始される。「将来のイベント動作を格納する」ステップ１２５の後、システムは、リクエスト受け付けステップ１２９に進み、ここで、図７に示しているように、視聴者のディスプレイ３３で通常プログラミング５０の上に確認情報６１が重ねられ、視聴者のコマンドがシステムに入力されたことを知らせる。所定時間が経過すると、システムは、通常プログラミングステップ１０７を継続し、システムが視聴者が示した動作を行うときまで、図８に示すように通常プログラミング５０が続く。
図９を参照して、ナビゲーションシステムをプログラミング情報チャネルに応用した場合について説明する。コンピュータ１１により送られ、通常プログラミング２３の上に重ねられる識別信号１９により、テキスト６３は、視聴者のディスプレイ３３上で通常プログラミング５０の上に重ねられる。あるいは、プログラミング情報チャネルの応用では、識別信号１６、１９または２６の使用は省略することができ、アイコンを使用するだけで、または、テキスト６３を通常プログラミング５０の表示の中に物理的に配置するだけで、視聴者に、情報信号１８、２０または２８の存在を知らせることができる。即ち、アイコンまたはテキスト６３は、プログラミング情報チャネルについての通常プログラミング５０の一部分として伝送される。ディスプレイ上にアイコンが現れると、あるいは、テキスト６３がディスプレイ３３上の特定の物理的場所に表示されると、コンピュータ１１に情報信号２０が存在する可能性があることについて、視聴者に自動的に注意が呼びかけれられ、視聴者は、リモート３５を操作することにより、即座に通常プログラミング信号２３の上に情報信号２０を重ねることができる。
ナビゲーションシステムで用いられるアイコン５１を、識別された特別イベントの性質と具体的に相関させてもよいことも企図される。例えば、プロジェクターの形状にしたアイコンは映画イベントを示し得、竜巻の形状にしたアイコンは気象イベントを示し得、ギターの形状にしたアイコンは音楽イベントを示し得、開いた新聞の形状にしたアイコンはニュースイベントを示し得、フットボールのヘルメットの形状にしたアイコンはスポーツイベントを示し得るなどである。
従って、明らかに、本発明により、上述の目的、目標および利点を完全に満足する対話型特別イベントビデオ信号ナビゲーションシステムが提供される。本発明を特定の実施形態について説明してきたが、以上の説明に鑑みて多くの代替物、変更および変形が当業者に明らかとなることは言うまでもない。従って、添付の請求の範囲内にあるそのような代
替物、変更および変形はすべて本発明に含まれるものとする。

Claims (28)

  1. テレビ視聴者がディスプレイ上のテレビ番組を見ている場合に、該テレビ視聴者に注文する機会を提供する方法であって、該方法は、プロセッサを含むシステム上に実装されており、
    該方法は、
    ユーザ入力に応答するのではなく、該システムが特定の信号を受信したことを該プロセッサが決定したことに応答して、該ディスプレイ上の該テレビ番組上にアイコンを自動的に表示することであって、該アイコンは、テレビイベントが利用可能であることを示し、該アイコンは、該テレビイベントの性質に基づく形状を有している、ことと、
    該テレビ視聴者が該アイコンに応答したことを該プロセッサが決定した場合に、該プロセッサを用いて、該テレビ視聴者が該テレビイベントの注文を行うために該テレビ番組上に情報を表示することと
    を包含する、方法。
  2. 前記テレビ視聴者が注文を行うことを可能にすることをさらに包含する、請求項１に記載の方法。
  3. 前記テレビ視聴者が注文を行うために前記テレビ番組上に情報を表示することは、承認を必要とする注文を該テレビ視聴者が行うために該テレビ番組上に該情報を表示することを包含する、請求項２に記載の方法。
  4. 承認を提供するためにユーザが個人識別番号を入力することを可能にすることをさらに包含する、請求項３に記載の方法。
  5. 前記アイコンを表示することは、特定の期間の間、前記テレビ番組上に前記アイコンを表示することをさらに包含する、請求項１に記載の方法。

  8. テレビイベントを記録する方法であって、該方法は、プロセッサを含むシステム上に実装されており、

    ユーザ入力に応答するのではなく、該システムが特定の信号を受信したことを該プロセッサが決定したことに応答して、該テレビイベントが利用可能であることを示すアイコンを自動的に表示することであって、該アイコンは、テレビに現在表示されているテレビ番組上に重ねられ、該アイコンは、該テレビイベントの性質に基づく形状を有している、ことと、
    該アイコンが表示されたことに応答して、ユーザ機器上でユーザ入力を受信することと、
    該ユーザ入力が受信されたことを該プロセッサが決定したことに応答して、該テレビイベントを該ユーザ機器に記録することと
    を包含する、方法。
  9. 前記ユーザ入力は、リモート制御デバイス上のキーを押下することを含む、請求項８に記載の方法。
  10. 前記アイコンは、所定の時間が経過した後に、表示から自動的に取り除かれる、請求項８に記載の方法。
  11. 前記ユーザ入力は、第１のタイプと第２のタイプとを含み、前記アイコンは、該第１のタイプのユーザ入力が受信されたことに応答して、表示から取り除かれ、前記テレビイベントは、該第２のタイプのユーザ入力が受信されたことに応答して、ユーザ機器に記録される、請求項８に記載の方法。
  12. 前記アイコンは、前記テレビイベントが属するテレビイベントのジャンルを示す、請求項８に記載の方法。
  13. 前記テレビイベントは、前記テレビに現在表示されているテレビ番組に関連している、請求項８に記載の方法。
  14. 前記テレビイベントは、将来のテレビイベントである、請求項８に記載の方法。
  15. テレビ視聴者がディスプレイ上のテレビ番組を見ている場合に、該テレビ視聴者に注文する機会を提供するシステムであって、
    該システムは、プロセッサを含み、

    ユーザ入力に応答するのではなく、該システムが特定の信号を受信したことを該プロセッサが決定したことに応答して、該ディスプレイ上の該テレビ番組上にアイコンを自動的に表示する手段であって、該アイコンは、テレビイベントの利用可能であることを示し、該アイコンは、該テレビイベントの性質に基づく形状を有している、手段と、
    該テレビ視聴者が該アイコンに応答したことを該プロセッサが決定した場合に、該プロセッサを用いて、該テレビ視聴者が該テレビイベントの注文を行うために該テレビ番組上に情報を表示する手段と
    を含む、システム。
  16. 前記テレビ視聴者が注文を行うことを可能にする手段をさらに含む、請求項１５に記載のシステム。
  17. 前記テレビ視聴者が注文を行うために前記テレビ番組上に情報を表示する手段は、承認を必要とする注文を該テレビ視聴者が行うために該テレビ番組上に該情報を表示する手段を含む、請求項１６に記載のシステム。

    該アイコンが表示されたことに応答して、ユーザ機器上でユーザ入力を受信する手段と、
    該ユーザ入力が受信されたことを該プロセッサが決定したことに応答して、該テレビイベントを該ユーザ機器に記録する手段と
    を含む、システム。
  23. 前記ユーザ入力は、リモート制御デバイス上のキーを押下することを含む、請求項２２に記載のシステム。
