Description
The present invention relates to an organic electroluminescent element and a display device using the same, and more particularly to an organic electroluminescent element that emits white light and a display device for full color display using the organic electroluminescent element.
An organic electroluminescent element using electroluminescence of organic material is provided with a light emitting unit in which organic layers such as a hole transport layer and a light emitting layer are laminated between an anode and a cathode, and a low voltage direct current It attracts attention as a light-emitting element capable of high-luminance emission by driving.
One of full-color display devices using such organic electroluminescent elements has a configuration in which an organic electroluminescent element that emits white light (hereinafter, white light emitting element) and a color filter are combined. By adopting such a configuration, a full-color display device can be manufactured without creating different organic electroluminescent elements that emit light of each color, that is, without performing high-definition painting using a metal mask in the formation of the light-emitting layer. can do.
As a configuration of the white light emitting element, there is a configuration in which two layers of light emitting layers are stacked in one light emitting unit sandwiched between an anode and a cathode, and these are simultaneously emitted to extract white light emission as a whole. Yes. In such a configuration, an electron-transporting light-emitting layer and a hole-transporting light-emitting layer are stacked with a carrier recombination region in between, and an emission spectrum from the device includes a blue region, a green region, and a red region of visible light. A configuration is disclosed in which the combined emission color is white (see Patent Document 1 below). In addition, a configuration is disclosed in which the uneven emission color can be canceled by using a light emitting layer on the anode side as a blue light emitting layer and a cathode side as a yellow to red light emitting layer (Patent Document 2 below). reference).
Another example of the configuration of the white light emitting element is a so-called tandem type in which a plurality of light emitting units are stacked between a cathode and an anode via a charge generation layer. In such a tandem element, a light emitting layer provided in each light emitting unit is configured so that the light emission color becomes white by superimposing light emitted from each light emitting unit (see
However, each white light emitting element having the above-described configuration has the following problems.
That is, in a configuration in which two light emitting layers are stacked in one light emitting unit sandwiched between an anode and a cathode, red (R), green (G), blue ( Although it is required to adjust the light emission balance of the color B), such adjustment is very difficult. For this reason, for white light emitting elements arranged in pixels that take out blue light emission with the lowest luminous efficiency, a higher drive current value is set than elements arranged in other pixels, thereby red (R), The light emission balance of green (G) and blue (B) colors is adjusted. However, by setting the drive current value as described above, the deterioration rate of the white light emitting element of the pixel from which the blue light emission is extracted becomes faster than the elements arranged in other pixels. For this reason, a difference occurs in the deterioration rate of the white light emitting element for each pixel corresponding to each color. Therefore, a temporal shift occurs in the light emission balance of the display device. Moreover, in order to alleviate such a deviation in light emission balance, many layers in which three kinds of organic materials are co-evaporated are often used, but this is difficult to control in production and may not be reproducible. Many.
In particular, Patent Document 2 shows a configuration in which the light emitting layer on the anode side is a blue light emitting layer and the cathode side is a yellow to red light emitting layer. In the configuration that realizes the above, high color purity cannot be realized when a combination display device is configured with a color filter.
On the other hand, in the case of a tandem white light-emitting element, when a full-color display device is configured in combination with a color filter, three light emitting layers each emitting red (R), green (G), and blue (B) are provided. High color purity can be achieved by stacking the light emitting units. However, considering the principle of the tandem element, it is necessary to apply a driving voltage at least three times that of a white light emitting element using a single light emitting unit. For this reason, in particular, in an active matrix display device that drives an organic electroluminescence element using a thin film transistor (TFT), the upper limit value of a practical drive voltage is often exceeded. Therefore, it is difficult to say that it is practical to configure a display device using such a tandem white light emitting element from the viewpoint of driving voltage.
Therefore, the present invention provides an organic electroluminescent device that can be driven at a low voltage and has a well-controlled emission balance, and suppresses a color change by using such an organic electroluminescent device. It is an object of the present invention to provide a display device capable of stabilizing the light emission balance over time and capable of stable color display over a long period of time.
In order to achieve such an object, an organic electroluminescent element of the present invention includes at least one first light emitting unit and at least one second light emitting unit, which are stacked via a connection layer, and includes an anode and a cathode. It is a tandem organic electroluminescent element sandwiched between them. The first light emitting unit has a red light emitting layer and a green light emitting layer, and the energy level of the highest occupied orbit of the host material constituting the green light emitting layer is the energy of the highest occupied orbit of the host material constituting the red light emitting layer. It is lower than the level, the difference between the energy levels is 0.2 eV or more, and the second light emitting unit is provided with a blue light emitting layer . The connection layer is a layer for supplying charges to the first light emitting unit and the second light emitting unit.
In the organic electroluminescent element having such a configuration, a total of at least three organic light emitting layers are laminated in two light emitting units laminated between the anode and the cathode. For this reason, each of these at least three organic light emitting layers emits light in different light emission colors, thereby realizing white light emission by mixing three colors. Therefore, it becomes easier to adjust the light emission balance between the light emitting layers of the respective colors as compared with the conventional configuration in which two light emitting layers are stacked in one light emitting unit to emit white light. Moreover, since the red (R), green (G), and blue (B) light emitting layers for obtaining white light emission are individually provided, the manufacturing control of each color light emitting layer is facilitated and reproducibility. Will also improve. In addition, since the number of stacked light emitting units can be two as compared with the tandem conventional configuration in which each of the three light emitting units is provided with a light emitting layer of each color to emit white light, the driving voltage can be suppressed. .
The display device of the present invention is formed by arranging the above-described organic electroluminescent elements on a substrate.
And in the 1st display apparatus, the color filter which permeate | transmits the light of a predetermined light emission wavelength was provided in the extraction side of the emitted light in each organic electroluminescent element. According to such a display device, light emitted from a plurality of organic electroluminescent elements in which the light emission balance between the light emitting layers of the respective colors is adjusted is extracted through the color filter. Thereby, the light emission balance (color balance) of the light extracted from each color filter is also improved without adjusting the drive current value for driving the organic electroluminescent element. Therefore, the deterioration rate of each organic electroluminescent element is made uniform.
In the second display device, light having a predetermined light emission wavelength out of the light emitted from the light emitting layers provided in the first light emitting unit and the second light emitting unit is resonated inside the device. The film thickness of the transparent conductive film constituting the anode or cathode was adjusted. According to such a display device, in each organic electroluminescent element in which the light emission balance between the light emitting layers of the respective colors is adjusted, the light having a predetermined emission wavelength resonates by adjusting the film thickness of the transparent conductive film. It is taken out. As a result, the light emission balance (color balance) of light taken out in resonance can be improved without adjusting the drive current value for driving the organic electroluminescent element. Therefore, the deterioration rate of each organic electroluminescent element is made uniform.
As described above, according to the organic electroluminescent element of the present invention, it is possible to drive at a low voltage and to easily control the light emission balance, so that it is possible to obtain light emission with a well controlled light emission balance. become. In the display device of the present invention, by using such an organic electroluminescent element, the deterioration rate of the plurality of organic electroluminescent elements can be made uniform, thereby suppressing the color change and the luminescence balance over time. Stabilization can be achieved, and stable color display over a long period of time can be achieved.
FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view showing one structural example of the organic electroluminescent element of the present invention. The organic electroluminescent element 1 shown in this figure is a tandem type in which light emitting units are stacked, and includes an
In the following description, the emitted light generated when the holes injected from the
First, the substrate 11 on which the organic electroluminescent element 1 is provided is appropriately selected from a transparent substrate such as glass, a silicon substrate, a film-like flexible substrate, and the like. When the driving method of the display device configured using the organic electroluminescence element 1 is an active matrix method, a TFT substrate in which a TFT is provided for each pixel is used as the substrate 11. In this case, this display device has a structure in which the organic electroluminescent element 1 of the top emission type is driven using a TFT.
The
In this case, by configuring the
Further, by forming the
When the driving method of the display device configured using the organic electroluminescent element 1 is an active matrix method, the
The first light emitting unit 15-1 provided on the
Each of these layers is composed of an organic layer formed by, for example, a vacuum deposition method or another method such as a spin coating method.
Among these, there are no limiting conditions for the materials constituting the
The
The present embodiment is characterized in that two light emitting layers having different emission wavelengths (here, red
Therefore, in the present embodiment, the red
Here, the red
Such a red
On the other hand, the green
Such a green
Note that a charge control layer (not shown) may be provided between the red
By disposing such a charge control layer between the red
As described above, well-balanced two-color light emission is realized as the entire first light emitting unit 15-1.
Further, as the entire first light emitting unit 15-1, in order from the
The
Such a
As one configuration example of such a
The second light emitting unit 15-2 provided on the
The second light emitting unit 15-2 is provided with a light emitting layer that emits light having a shorter wavelength than the two light emitting
The blue
Such a blue
Then, the
The
Here, since the display device is a top emission type, as will be described later, a resonator structure is formed between the
When the
When the driving method of the display device configured using the organic electroluminescent element 1 is an active matrix method, the
In the organic electroluminescent element 1 having the above-described configuration, the red
Therefore, the light emission balance between the light emitting
In particular, in the present embodiment, the blue
Moreover, since the red (R), green (G), and blue (B) light emitting layers for obtaining white light emission are individually provided, the manufacturing control of each color light emitting layer is facilitated and reproducibility. Will also improve. In addition, since the number of stacked light emitting units is two as compared with the conventional tandem configuration in which each of the three light emitting units is provided with a light emitting layer of each color to emit white light, the driving voltage can be suppressed.
In the above embodiment, the configuration in which the first light emitting unit 15-1, the
Moreover, in the above embodiment, the structure which applied this invention to the top emission type organic electroluminescent element which takes out light emission from the
On the other hand, by forming the
Furthermore, in the embodiment described above, the red
FIG. 2 illustrates the configuration of a full-
The
A
Such a
For example, when the
When the

A
In the
As a result, it is possible to stabilize the white balance over time, thereby enabling full color display with high color reproducibility over a long period of time.
In the
For example, in the configuration described with reference to FIG. 1, when the
When a full-color display device is configured using such an organic electroluminescent element having a resonator structure, the organic electroluminescent element is designed so that light of each color wavelength of red, green, and blue is extracted by resonance. Are arranged on the substrate.
Here, it is important that the light emission balance of the emitted light generated in each color
In a display device using an organic electroluminescent element designed as such a resonator structure, each organic electroluminescent element in which the light emission balance in each color
Therefore, similarly to the display device described with reference to FIG. 2, the light emission balance (color balance) of light taken out in resonance is good without adjusting the drive current value for driving the organic electroluminescent element. become. Therefore, the deterioration rate of each organic electroluminescent element is made uniform, the white balance can be stabilized over time, and full color display with high color reproducibility can be performed for a long time.
By combining an organic electroluminescent element having such a resonator structure and a color filter, it becomes possible to extract emitted light with higher color purity.
Next, as a specific example of the present invention, the manufacturing procedure of the organic electroluminescent element will be described with reference to FIG. 1, and the evaluation result of the manufactured organic electroluminescent element will be described.
