BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a super twist liquid crystal display (hereinafter abbreviated as STN) having a wide operating temperature range, and also relates to an electro-optical liquid crystal display using a material having a specific structure in a liquid crystal composition.
[0002]
[Prior art]
The liquid crystal display (LCD) has been developed in the same way as computers since its appearance as a calculator display. From the TN-LCD (twisted nematic liquid crystal display) to the STN-LCD (super twist nematic) ) To support the expansion of display capacity. STN-LCD was developed by Scheffer et al. [SID '85 Digest, p. 120 (1985)] or Kinukawa et al. [SID '86 Digest, p. 122 (1986)]. Widely used in displays for high information processing. STN-LCD is a TN-LCD that twists about 90 ° more strongly. By increasing the twist, the optical response to the applied voltage becomes steep, and sufficient contrast in high-density display that cannot be achieved with TN-LCD can be obtained. On the other hand, because it is strongly twisted, it is difficult to stably maintain the twisted orientation, and it is not sufficiently twisted, called the under domain, or is called the stripe domain, and the molecules in the center of the cell are wavy because the twist is not stable. Thus, scattering occurs, and a state in which contrast is remarkably deteriorated occurs. In order to make such an undesirable state difficult to occur, control of parameters such as the molecular structure of the liquid crystal composition, the tilt angle, the elastic constant, and the intermolecular interaction has become important. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for notebook computers for portable use, and STN-LCDs used for these applications are required to have characteristics that can withstand outdoor use. For this reason, it has excellent contrast at high temperature, no crystal precipitation or smectic phase is observed at low temperature, and it has the characteristics that it does not show a decrease in contrast or display failure even when left under UV light or sunlight exposure. Although strongly demanded, conventional liquid crystal compositions and liquid crystal display devices using them have not always satisfied these requirements. That is, a liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display element that simultaneously satisfy a high nematic-isotropic transition temperature, a low crystal (or smectic) transition temperature, steep electro-optical characteristics that enable high contrast, and high reliability against heat and light. There wasn't.
[0003]
For example, WO9403558 and JP-A-63-61083 disclose examples of liquid crystal compositions using a trifluoro compound and a difluoro compound, but the liquid crystal temperature range is narrow or the temperature stability at low temperatures is disclosed. Currently, there are many problems such as insufficient voltage and high threshold voltage. Further, JP-A-4-501878 and JP-A-5-70777 disclose improvement by the liquid crystal composition of STN-LCD, but it has not been a sufficient solution to the above problems.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
The most important issues are the liquid crystal composition and display characteristics that can produce STN-LCDs with excellent steepness of electro-optical characteristics, high contrast, hardly causing unstable twisted structure, high yield, and high-speed response. Finding the optimal combination of liquid crystal composition with optimized birefringence and elastic constants and display parameters.
[0005]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
As a result of exhaustive examination of liquid crystal material compounds and liquid crystal compositions, a liquid crystal composition for STN-LCD that satisfies the above-mentioned problems or can suppress the above disadvantages to a lesser extent than before has been found, and STN- I was able to create an LCD. The present invention is described in detail below.

[0037]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Since STN-LCD is a mode that utilizes birefringence, fine adjustment of Δn · d is required. Δn of a liquid crystal compound is mainly determined by its ring structure, and Δn is conventionally adjusted by a combination of skeletons such as a cyclohexane ring, a phenyl ring, and a hetero ring. However, it is very difficult to adjust Δn while satisfying various parameters required for STN-LCD. In particular, the nematic temperature range is the most important parameter, and there has been a strong demand for simultaneous expansion of the nematic temperature range and adjustment of Δn, but a liquid crystal composition that can be satisfied conventionally and a super twist display using the same. Was not obtained. In the present invention, by using a liquid crystal compound having a decalin structure as a ring structure and having a relatively small Δn, the nematic temperature range can be expanded and Δn can be adjusted simultaneously.
[0038]
The expansion of the nematic temperature range is useful for portable terminal displays that have recently been demanded. The composition according to the present invention has an effect of expanding not only the nematic upper limit temperature but also the nematic lower limit temperature at which the temperature or range becomes crystalline or smectic, so the super twist liquid crystal display using the composition of the present invention is It is possible to operate with high contrast even in outdoor high-temperature environments or low-temperature environments. The combination of the compounds used in the composition of the present invention has a wider liquid crystal temperature range than the conventional composition, and is excellent in steep electro-optical characteristics in STN, so it has high contrast and high temperature reliability. A high STN display can be produced.

It can be seen that Example 1 in which 10% of Compound 0d1CC5 in Comparative Example 1 is substituted with C1 of the compound of formula (1) and Example 2 in which 20% is substituted have both expanded the nematic temperature range. A chiral substance “S-811” (manufactured by Merck) was added to the liquid crystal compositions obtained in Comparative Example 1, Example 1 and Example 2 to prepare mixed liquid crystals. An organic film of “Sunever 150” (Nissan Chemical Co., Ltd.) is formed on the opposing flat transparent electrodes, and alignment treatment is performed by rubbing. The liquid crystal composition is injected into a cell with a twist angle set to 240 degrees, and a super twist display. Was made. The chiral material was added so that the intrinsic helical pitch P of the mixed liquid crystal and the cell thickness d of the display cell were Δn · d = 0.85 and d / P = 0.50 by adding the chiral material. As shown in Table 1, in the super twist display using the liquid crystal compositions of Example 1 and Example 2, the steepness γ is improved compared to the comparative example (γ approaches 1). Even at a low temperature of −30 ° C., no precipitation or smectic was observed, and the low-temperature stability was excellent, and a display stable against heat and light was obtained.
