Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to vacuum tube technology, and more particularly to an X-ray tube cathode cup structure that deflects the focus of an electron beam. The present invention is particularly applicable in conjunction with a rotating anode X-ray tube for a CT scanner and will be described with particular reference thereto. However, it will be appreciated that the present invention applies also to vacuum tubes for radiation generation and other uses.
Conventional x-ray tubes have an electron beam source in the form of a vacuum enclosure and a cathode. The cathode has a heating filament that emits electrons. As the electron beam impinges on the anode, a beam of X radiation is typically emitted from the X-ray tube through the beryllium window. Due to the trend of shortening the X-ray exposure time in X-ray imaging, the radiation has a stronger intensity, and therefore the emphasis is placed on the high electron current. Increasing the strength can cause overheating of the x-ray tube anode. An electrical bias voltage is applied to the electron beam to control the focal spot size to some extent.
One way to more closely control the size of the electron focus on the anode is to mount the cathode filament within the cathode focusing or support cup member. Such a system is shown in US Pat. No. 4,689,809. The cathode cup is divided into two parts surrounding the filament. These parts are biased to the same or negative with respect to the filament. The biased cup reduces unnecessary “wings” or diffusion areas that appear as part of the x-ray focus.
Alternative cathode cup and filament configurations for controlling the size and shape of the electron focus on the vacuum tube anode are described in U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,685,118, 5,224,143, and 5,065,420. In the issue.
In order to minimize the power requirements of the focusing system and to maintain the correct positioning of the filament relative to the deflector, it is preferred that both the deflector and the filament be mounted on the same support. Accordingly, the cathode cup generally has a base or arm portion that supports a filament and a pair of deflectors. The deflector is mechanically attached to the base but is electrically isolated from the base. This is accomplished by using ceramic insulators that are sandwiched on both the base and deflector. The ceramic insulator has a central hole that receives a bolt therein to maintain component alignment during brazing. In order to avoid short circuits, the bolt is electrically isolated from the base. Such cathode cup designs are difficult to assemble, difficult to align, and are prone to short circuits. This can occur when the material used to braze the ceramic insulator to the base or deflector flows into the insulator hole that receives the bolt. A short circuit can also occur by natural plating of the ceramic insulator with metal vapor from the filament.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment Referring to FIG. 1, a rotating anode x-ray tube 1 of the type as used in a medical diagnostic system that supplies a beam of x-ray radiation is shown. The x-ray tube has an
The
2-6, the
The
As shown in FIG. 3, the
The
With particular reference to FIGS. 4 and 6, the
As best shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, each
The
The second top 120 (FIG. 6) of each
The insulator blocks 104 and 105 are made of an electrically insulating material such as alumina, for example. For example, alumina with a purity of 94% or 99%, such as AD94, AL500, or equivalent purity can be used. Al 2 O 3 conforming to ASTM standard D2442 type 4 is an exemplary insulating material. For effective electrical isolation of the deflector from the base (and filament), the insulator preferably provides a resistance of at least 720 gigaohms.
A pair of
The
Each
In another embodiment, pairs 130,130' and 132,132' deflector rod are respectively connected at their
Each of the insulator blocks 104, 105 preferably has a
The

Suitably, the brazing material of the insulator blocks 104, 105 is positioned in the shelf area. The brazing material can be the same type as the brazing material used to attach the cylindrical tube to the insulator block and the rod to the deflector. However, since brazing is preferably performed in three separate stages (rod to deflector, cylindrical tube to block, and block to base), the brazing material for each of the three joints Can be a variety of materials suitable for the parts to be joined and heated to the appropriate temperature so that the respective brazing material dissolves.
In order to provide a suitable surface for brazing, the insulator block preferably has a very
Insulator
To ensure alignment of the
Prior to laser or otherwise welding the
In another embodiment shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, a
As shown in FIG. 8, each hole has a tapered
Other components of the cathode assembly are similar to those described for the embodiment of FIGS. 2-6 and are numbered the same. Similar to the previous embodiment,
In this embodiment, both the deflector insulator block and the filament support are inserted from above the block, but the base can be configured to insert both the insulator block and the filament support from below the base. It is also possible.
Thus, one preferred method for assembling the cathode is as follows.

Rather than brazing the insulator to the base and deflector in one brazing operation, the component has three separate brazing stages a), b), c), and a welding stage f) in stages. The assembly method minimizes tolerance stacking due to improper alignment of the three components. The
