【0001】
Opt. Soc. Am.
Opt. Soc. Am.

Phys. Lett.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an optical parametric oscillator, and more particularly to a suitable one for obtaining high wavelength selectivity.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In the optical parametric oscillation, three lights of excitation light, signal light, and idler light interact in a nonlinear optical medium. Usually, excitation light is incident on a nonlinear optical medium to generate signal light and idler light, and laser oscillation is performed. In a nonlinear optical medium, if the polarization direction of the signal light or idler light is perpendicular to the plane formed by the traveling direction of the excitation light and the crystal axis of the nonlinear optical medium, the light is emitted by ordinary light (Ordinary ray; o). If it is parallel, it is called extraordinary ray (represented by e). Here, when certain excitation light is incident on the nonlinear optical medium under a certain phase matching condition, the case where the polarization directions of the signal light and the idler light are the same is called type-1, and the case where they are different from each other is called type-2.
[0003]
In the optical parametric effect, the wavelength λpThe wavelength λsSignal light and wavelength λiThese three lights have the following relationship.
[0004]
[Expression 1]
Where λsAnd λiA point where the two match is called a degenerate point.
[0005]
By the way, in the case of Type-1 in which the polarization directions of the signal light and idler light are the same, the phase matching condition is satisfied at a number of wavelengths near the degeneracy point, and as a result, the bandwidth of the oscillation wavelength in the optical parametric oscillation is greatly widened. There is a tendency. On the other hand, in the case of Type-2 having different polarization directions, the condition for phase matching is limited even in the vicinity of the degeneracy point, and the bandwidth does not widen.
[0006]
However, depending on the type of nonlinear optical medium, there is a type-2 optical parametric gain smaller than that of type-1 due to its characteristics. Therefore, in order to obtain high-energy oscillation light in the vicinity of the degenerate point, type-1 must be selected as the nonlinear optical medium of the optical parametric oscillator (for example, β-BBO (β-phase BaB2OFour) Crystal). However, as described above, the type-1 nonlinear optical medium tends to have a wide bandwidth near the degeneracy point. Therefore, when using a type-1 nonlinear optical medium, in order to narrow the bandwidth, there is a technique for narrowing the oscillation bandwidth by arranging a grating in the optical parametric resonator and performing wavelength selection. Proposed in “J. Opt. Soc. Am. B Vol. 12 (1995), 2117”.
[0007]
As described above, when the grating is used, the oscillation threshold value of the optical parametric oscillator becomes extremely large, and the energy of the oscillation light becomes small. For this reason, “J. Opt. Soc. Am. B Vol. 12 (1995), 2122” proposes a method of amplifying oscillation light again by a second optical parametric oscillator or an optical parametric amplifier.
[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, when the grating is used, since the threshold value of the optical parametric oscillation is large, high-energy excitation light must be used, which causes problems such as fear of damage to the nonlinear optical medium, mirror, lens, and the like.
[0009]
In addition, when the oscillation light is amplified again by the second parametric oscillator, it is necessary to provide a device for finely adjusting the angle of each nonlinear optical medium, a reflection mirror that changes the optical path of the oscillation light, etc. There is a problem that the control becomes complicated.
[0010]
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide an optical parametric oscillator capable of easily narrowing the oscillation bandwidth even without using a grating or a second parametric oscillator even near the degeneracy point.
[0011]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
An optical parametric oscillator according to the present invention includes an excitation light source that outputs excitation light, and a plurality of nonlinear optical media that are disposed on the optical path of the excitation light, oscillate optically by excitation light irradiation, and emit signal light and idler light. These multiple nonlinear optical mediaofPhase matching conditionAdjustPhase matching adjustment means,And an optical system that constitutes a resonator for the excitation light, the signal light, and the idler light, and the phase matching adjusting means is configured so that the polarization directions of the signal light and the idler light are the same in at least one of the plurality of nonlinear optical media. And at least one of them is phase-matched so that the polarization directions of the signal light and idler light are different.
[0012]
According to the present invention, the signal light and the idler light are amplified by the optical parametric gain of the nonlinear optical medium phase-matched so that the polarization directions of the signal light and the idler light are the same, and the polarization of the signal light and the idler light is further increased. An optical parametric oscillator capable of further amplifying signal light and idler light and narrowing the bandwidth of the oscillation light can be obtained by the nonlinear optical medium phase-matched so that the directions are different from each other.
[0013]
Further, the phase matching adjusting means of the optical parametric oscillator according to the present invention changes at least one of the incident angle of the excitation light to the nonlinear optical medium, the temperature of the nonlinear optical medium, or the applied voltage to the nonlinear optical medium. The phase matching condition may be adjusted as described above. According to the present invention, phase matching means for a plurality of nonlinear optical media can be appropriately selected. In some cases, the phase matching means of the plurality of nonlinear optical media need not be the same, and either the incident angle of the excitation light to the nonlinear optical medium, the temperature of the nonlinear optical medium, or the voltage applied to the nonlinear optical medium is changed. By using a combination of these techniques, it is possible to perform phase matching of the nonlinear optical medium.
[0014]
The optical parametric oscillator according to the present invention may further include a control unit that controls the phase matching adjustment unit based on the wavelength or light intensity of the signal light and idler light. According to the present invention, it is possible to accurately control the phase matching of each nonlinear optical medium, and to obtain an optical parametric oscillator capable of accurately tuning signal light and idler light even near the degeneracy point. it can.

In the optical parametric oscillator of FIG. 5, the signal light λ that is the oscillation light from the first pair of optical parametric oscillators.s(10), idler light λi(10) and signal light λ which is oscillation light from the second optical parametric oscillators(20), idler light λi(20) will oscillate.
[0040]
As described above, the optical parametric oscillator according to the present embodiment can have a plurality of optical parametric oscillators at the same time, and can oscillate light from the respective optical parametric oscillators. Needless to say, the number of nonlinear optical media of each optical parametric oscillator is not limited to two, and may be three or more.
[0041]
Next, a third embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. The optical parametric oscillator of FIG.1~ MFourConstitutes a closed-loop resonator, and the excitation light λpAn excitation light source (not shown) that emits light and an excitation light λpMirror M1And mirror M2-1 type non-linear optical medium 11 disposed between and pumping light λpMirror MThreeAnd mirror MFourAnd a type-2 nonlinear optical medium 12 disposed between the two.

In addition, a plurality of nonlinear optical media can be arranged in a closed loop, or a plurality of pairs of type-1 and type-2 nonlinear optical media can be arranged to realize the above-described second embodiment with a closed-loop resonator. Needless to say.

It is. Here, θ is the incident angle of the excitation light with respect to the crystal axis of the nonlinear optical medium.
[0047]
From Expressions (1) to (5), a phase matching curve that is a relationship of the phase matching wavelength with respect to θ for Type-1 and Type-2 is obtained. FIG. 7 shows a phase matching curve of optical parametric oscillation when BBO is used as the nonlinear optical medium and the third harmonic of the Nd: YAG laser: wavelength of 354.7 nm is used as the pumping light laser (there is no particular description below). As long as the BBO crystal is used for the nonlinear optical medium, and the third harmonic of the Nd: YAG laser: wavelength 354.7 nm is used for the excitation light laser). From FIG. 7, when it is desired to obtain oscillation light having the same wavelength in the type-1 and type-2 BBO crystals by adjusting the incident angle θ of the excitation light, the incident angle θ of the excitation light to the type-2 nonlinear optical medium It can be understood that the wavelength of the oscillation light greatly depends on the slight change in the incident angle θ of the excitation light, particularly in the case of the type-1 near the degeneracy point.
[0048]
The figure of merit (FOM) related to the optical parametric gain G at this time is expressed by the following equation.
[0049]
[Formula 6]
[0050]
[Expression 7]
Where C0Is the speed of light, ε0Is the dielectric constant of the vacuum. deffIs called an effective nonlinear constant, and is a value of a second-order nonlinear optical constant in a nonlinear optical medium under a certain phase matching condition. From this, when the length of the crystal is L, the optical parametric gain G is obtained as follows.
[0051]
[Equation 8]
Where IpIs the power density of the excitation light.
[0052]
Type-1 and Type-2 L, IpAre substantially the same, the ease of oscillation in optical parametric oscillation can be compared by FOM. FIG. 8 shows type-1 and type-2 FOMs in a BBO crystal. FOM (1) is a type-1 FOM, and FOM (2) is a type-2 FOM. In the case of BBO crystal, FOM (1) is cos2In θ, FOM (2) is cosFourSince it is proportional to θ, in Type-2 having a large phase matching angle, the optical parametric gain decreases remarkably as the degeneracy point is approached. On the other hand, it can be understood that FOM (1) becomes larger as it approaches the degeneracy point.

FIG. 9 shows a configuration example of a typical optical parametric oscillator when only the type-1 nonlinear

FIG. 11 shows the relationship of the bandwidth (half width: FWHM) with respect to each oscillation wavelength in the optical parametric oscillator of FIG. FIG. 11A shows the relationship of the half-value width to the oscillation wavelength, and FIG. 11B shows the relationship of the half-value width to the oscillation wavelength with a Kaiser. From FIG. 11, it can be understood that as the oscillation wavelength approaches 709.4 nm, which is the degeneracy point, the bandwidth suddenly increases and the energy of the oscillation light increases.

Regarding type-2, the bandwidth does not increase near the degeneracy point as compared with type-1, as shown in Fig. Of the document "Appl. Phys. Lett. Vol. 56 (1990), 1819". It is indicated by 2. In this way, it can be understood that the bandwidth of the type-1 nonlinear optical medium tends to widen greatly, but the oscillation bandwidth of the type-2 nonlinear optical medium does not widen.
[0056]
Next, referring to FIG. 12, by combining a type-1 nonlinear optical medium and a type-2 nonlinear optical medium, oscillation light having a large oscillation intensity and a narrow bandwidth can be obtained. Explain the situation. FIG. 12A shows the type-1 and type-2 nonlinear optical media in which the phase matching is performed with the wavelength of the signal light being 703.0 nm and the wavelength of the idler light being 715.9 nm. The oscillation spectrum of an optical parametric oscillator with only a medium, the oscillation spectrum of an optical parametric oscillator with only a type-2 nonlinear optical medium, and the oscillation spectrum of an optical parametric oscillator that combines type-1 and type-2 nonlinear optical media. Each is shown.
[0057]
As shown in FIG. 12A, in type-1, the bandwidth of the oscillation light is widened at each oscillation wavelength, and the oscillation intensity is high. On the other hand, in Type-2, the bandwidth is narrowed, but the oscillation intensity is extremely small. When these type-1 and type-2 nonlinear optical media are combined, the intensity of oscillation in the type-1 nonlinear optical medium and the narrowing of the type-2 bandwidth are reflected in the oscillation light. Thus, it is possible to obtain oscillation light having a strong oscillation intensity and a narrow bandwidth.
[0058]
FIG. 12B shows the phase matching of the type-1 nonlinear optical medium at the degeneracy point, and the phase matching of the type-2 nonlinear optical medium with the signal light wavelength of 703.0 nm and the idler light wavelength of 715.9 nm. The oscillation light spectrum of the optical parametric oscillator of type-1 only, the oscillation light spectrum of the optical parametric oscillator of type-2 only, and the oscillation light spectrum of the optical parametric oscillator combining type-1 and type-2. Each is shown.
[0059]
As shown in FIG. 12B, in type-1, the bandwidth of the oscillation light is wide near the degeneration point, and the oscillation intensity is high. On the other hand, in Type-2, the bandwidth is narrowed, but the oscillation intensity is extremely small. In the case of FIG. 12B, type-1 and type-2 do not emit oscillation light of the same wavelength, but since the intensity of type-1 oscillation light at each oscillation wavelength of type-2 is sufficiently large, type- When the
[0060]
Next, the spectrum distribution of the oscillation light when the optical parametric oscillator is actually oscillated will be described with reference to FIGS. FIG. 13 shows a spectral distribution when a type-1 nonlinear optical medium is arranged in an optical parametric oscillator and phase-matched at a degenerate point. That is, in the optical parametric oscillator of FIG. 9A, the spectrum distribution is obtained when phase matching is performed at the degeneracy point. It can be understood from FIG. 13 that the oscillation light has a spectrum spread of about 40 nm. In this way, it can be understood that the spread of the oscillation spectrum is large in the case of an optical parametric oscillator using only a type-1 nonlinear optical medium.
[0061]
Next, when the optical parametric oscillation state in FIG. 13 is maintained and a type-2 nonlinear optical medium is inserted into the resonator and phase matching is performed at the degeneracy point, that is, the optical parametric oscillators in FIGS. FIG. 14 shows the spectral distribution of the oscillation light when the nonlinear
[0062]
Next, when the phase matching condition of the type-2 nonlinear optical medium is slightly changed from the state of FIG. 14, the signal light and the idler light are separated as shown in FIG. Further, when the phase matching condition of the type-2 nonlinear optical medium is changed from the state of FIG. 15, the signal light and the idler light are further separated as shown in FIG. This means that the signal light and the idler light can be accurately synchronized.
[0063]
As described above, in the optical parametric oscillator according to the present embodiment, by using a combination of a type-1 nonlinear optical medium and a type-2 nonlinear optical medium, the oscillation intensity is strong even near the degeneracy point and the bandwidth does not increase. Oscillation light is obtained.
[0064]
In the present embodiment, the fundamental wave and the third harmonic of the Nd: YAG laser are used as the excitation light. However, the second harmonic of the Nd: YAG laser or other laser light may be used as the excitation light. . In addition, since the present invention does not use a grating for selecting the wavelength of oscillation light, it is very useful for an optical parametric oscillator using an excitation light source having a low energy density, such as an LD-excited Nd: YAG laser.
[0065]
In this embodiment, BBO crystal type-1 and type-2 are used as the nonlinear optical medium. However, the nonlinear optical medium to be used is not limited to the BBO crystal, and other types of nonlinear optical media such as LBO, KTP, or LN. May be used. A plurality of nonlinear optical media may be used, but it is not necessary that all of them are the same type of nonlinear optical medium. For example, type-1 LBO and type-2 BBO, type-1 BBO and type Various kinds of nonlinear optical media such as KTP-2 may be used in combination. Furthermore, these nonlinear optical media may be of a quasi phase matching periodic structure type instead of bulk.
[0066]
Next, a specific application example of the optical parametric oscillator according to the present invention will be described with reference to FIG. The basic part of the following contents is described in the document “Applied Physics Vol. 65 No. 1 (1996) p.31”.
[0067]
In recent years, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has attracted attention in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. This is a treatment method of irradiating cancer cells with laser light to generate singlet oxygen, which is a kind of active oxygen, and killing cancer cells. Since singlet oxygen is also harmful to normal cells, it is essential to diagnose cancer cells and normal cell sites, but a photosensitizer is injected into the body, and the accumulation state of the photosensitizer is normal to cancer cells. A method for diagnosing a cancer cell site by utilizing the difference between cells has been proposed. The use of a substance called ME2906 as the photosensitive substance has been studied.
[0068]
The ME 2906 is excited when irradiated with light having a wavelength of 664 nm, and has a characteristic that autofluorescence near a wavelength of 670 nm is emitted from a normal cell and there is no fluorescence from a cancer cell. Therefore, as shown in FIG. 17, in a state where ME 2960 is accumulated in the body, a 664 nm laser beam is guided to the affected area with an optical fiber or the like, and fluorescence of a wavelength of 670 nm is detected to detect normal cells and cancer cells. It is possible to diagnose the site. In addition, it is possible to confirm the killing of cancer cells by laser light irradiation by detecting autofluorescence near a wavelength of 670 nm.
[0069]
However, the wavelength of 664 nm used for diagnosis and the fluorescence wavelength of 670 nm from normal cells are very close, and the wavelength range of 664 nm and 670 nm could not be determined because the wavelength width was wide with the conventional laser light. Therefore, there has been an increasing need for laser light having good wavelength selectivity and having a wavelength width of 1 nm, preferably 0.5 nm or less. Regarding the wavelength width, even a laser diode can obtain a laser of about 0.5 nm, but the pulsed light obtained by the optical parametric oscillator of this embodiment has a higher penetrability to cancer cells. It is easy to use as a special effect.
[0070]
Therefore, in the optical parametric oscillator according to the present invention, laser light having a wavelength wavelength of 0.5 nm or less can be obtained because the wavelength selectivity of the oscillation light is good, so that it can be applied to PDT and the expectation is also increased. ing. From the above, it can be expected that the optical parametric oscillator of the present invention greatly contributes to the application to PDT.
[0071]
【The invention's effect】
As described above in detail, in the optical parametric oscillator of the present invention, a plurality of nonlinear optical media including at least one type-1 nonlinear optical medium and at least one type-2 nonlinear optical medium are used. By individually adjusting the phase matching conditions of the nonlinear optical medium, it is possible to narrow the bandwidth of the optical parametric oscillation light near the degeneration point and to obtain oscillation light having a large oscillation intensity. At this time, since the wavelength selection can be controlled only by adjusting the phase matching condition of the nonlinear optical medium, it can be easily controlled.
[0072]
In addition, since a laser having a low energy density can be used as the excitation light source, it is easy to avoid damage due to the laser of the nonlinear optical medium or the optical system.
[0073]
In addition, signal light and idler light can be accurately separated by changing the phase matching condition of one nonlinear optical medium among a plurality of nonlinear optical media, so that oscillation light of a desired wavelength can be easily obtained. It is.
