目地用ガスケットとしては、柱部の両側に複数の内部リップを、柱部上端に外部リップを備え、目地内にリップが上向きに撓んで屈曲された状態で挿入されるものが一般的であるが、挿入時にリップが左又は右に傾いて、いわゆる「転び」を生じ易い。

ガスケットの断面形状を縦長の長方形にすれば、挿入時に転びにくゝなるが、この場合、目地幅に許容幅を持たせることができない。すなわちガスケットの厚みが目地幅より大きいと挿入が困難となり、逆に小さいとシール性が損なわれると共に、目地に止着することができなくなる。また断面形状を長方形にすると、ボリュームも大きくなり、コスト高となる。そこで、図4に示すように、外部リップ12と、その下隣りの内部リップ13をブリッジ片14で連結して上側部に略四角形部分を形成したガスケット11が考えられた。
