【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は、用紙にインクを吹き付けて印字するインクジェット記録装置に関するものである。

【従来の技術】
ファクシミリ装置等の通信装置やパーソナルコンピュータ等の情報処理装置には、通常、文字や図形からなるデータを視覚情報として記録するように、これらのデータを用紙に印字可能な記録装置が接続されている。この記録装置には、インパクト方式や感熱方式、インクジェット方式等の各種の印字方式が採用されているが、近年においては、静粛性に優れていると共に各種材質の用紙に印字可能なインクジェット方式を採用したインクジェット記録装置が多用されるようになっている。

上記のインクジェット記録装置は、例えば64チャンネル分のノズルが副走査方向に配列された印字ヘッドと用紙とを対向配置し、印字ヘッドを主走査しながら、ノズルからインクを噴射させて用紙に吹き付けることにより1バンド分の印字を行った後、この用紙を1バンド幅副走査するという印字処理を繰り返すことにより用紙の全面に印字するようになっている。従って、このような動作により印字するインクジェット記録装置は、用紙に吹き付けられたインクが吹き付け部分以外を汚さないように、インクに対して速乾性が要求される一方、高精細の印字出力となるように、ノズルに対して小口径化が要求されるため、ノズルがインクの凝固により目詰まりして印字不良が生じ易いものになっている。

そこで、従来のインクジェット記録装置においては、図8に示すように、印字ヘッドを主走査しながらノズルを複数チャンネル毎に順次選択して印字させることによって、各ノズルに対応する直線状のマーキング51a…を副走査方向に等間隔に有したチェックパターン51を印字し、このチェックパターン51のマーキング51a…をオペレータや光学センサ等により読み取らせてノズルの目詰まりを検出させるようになっている。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
ところで、実際の印字においては、インクがインクカートリッジからメッシュフィルタおよびインク流路を経て印字ヘッドに供給される際に、インクカートリッジの背圧やメッシュフィルタおよびインク流路の流動抵抗等がインク供給の阻害要因として存在するため、インクの使用量が増大すると、インクの供給量が使用量に追いつかずに印字不良が生じることがある。

従って、このようなインクの供給不足による印字不良に対しても、チェックパターン51を用いて検査できることが望ましいが、上記従来の構成では、チェックパターン51の印字に要する単位時間当たりのインクの使用量(印字デューティ)が実際の印字における使用量よりも少ないため、上記の印字不良を検出することはできない。

そこで、図9に示すように、目詰まりによる印字不良用のチェックパターン51に加えて、インクの供給不足による印字不良用のフルベタ印字のチェックパターン52を別のバンドに印字すれば、図10に示すように、インクの供給不足による印字不良を検出することが可能になる。

ところが、この場合には、2バンド分のチェックパターン51・52を印字することが必要となるため、印字不良の検査に長時間を要することになるという問題がある。さらに、チェックパターン52中に印字不良が生じても、印字不良を生じたノズルのチャンネルを特定することができないという問題もある。

よって、本発明は、ノズルの目詰まりによる印字不良の検査と、インクの供給不足による印字不良の検査とを短時間で完了することができるインクジェット記録装置を提供し、さらに、印字不良を生じたノズルのチャンネルを特定することもできるインクジェット記録装置を提供しようとするものである。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記課題を解決するために、請求項1の発明は、印字ヘッドに供給されたインクを該印字ヘッドの複数のノズルから記録媒体に噴出して印字するインクジェット記録装置であって、印字不良を生じたノズルを特定する為の検査部分と、前記検査部分の印字中におけるインクの消費量を通常の印字時におけるインクの消費量に対応させるように印字デューティを調整するインク量調整部分とが、印字ヘッドの走査方向に交互に配置されてなるチェックパターンの作成処理を記憶し、チェックパターンの印字信号に応じて前記チェックパターンを印字する装置であり、前記チェックパターンの検査部分は、複数ノズル毎に選択された前記ノズルから、同時にインク滴を連続噴出させて形成される複数のマーキングからなり、前記複数のマーキングは、副走査方向に等間隔に複数個単位で形成されており、前記チェックパターンのインク量調整部分は、全ノズルからインクを噴出させて形成されており、前記インク量調整部分を印字するのに必要なインク量の影響が、前記検査部分を印字する際に生じ、前記検査部分にインクの供給不足による印字不良が出現することによって、前記ノズルの目詰まりによる印字不良とインクの供給不足による印字不良とを検出することを特徴としている。これにより、ノズルの目詰まりによる印字不良と、インクの供給不足による印字不良とを検出可能なチェックパターンを印字することによって、これらの印字不良を同時に検査することができるため、印字不良の検査を短時間で完了させることができる。また、インク量調整部分において必要とされるインク供給量の影響を検査部分においても生じさせ、検査部分にインク供給不足による印字不良を出現させることができる。

【発明の実施の形態】
本発明の実施の形態を図1ないし図7に基づいて以下に説明する。本実施の形態に係るインクジェット記録装置は、図2に示すように、メイン基板1を有している。メイン基板1には、印字処理や、目詰まりを解消するパージ処理、チェックパターンを作成するチェックパターン作成処理等の各種の処理ルーチンを記憶したROM部2と、印字データを記憶するプリントバッファ等の記憶領域が形成されたRAM部3と、上記の各種の処理ルーチンを実行するCPU部4とが設けられており、CPU部4は、チェックパターン作成処理ルーチンを実行したときに、目詰まりによる印字不良とインクの供給不足による印字不良とを同時に検出可能な図1(a)・(b)のチェックパターン15を印字するようになっている。

即ち、CPU部4は、図1(a)・(b)に示すように、検査部分15aとインク量調整部分15bとを主走査方向に交互に形成したチェックパターン15を印字するようになっている。検査部分15aは、複数チャンネル毎に順次選択されたノズルからインクを噴出させて形成されたマーキング15c…からなっており、ノズルの目詰まりおよびインクの供給不足のうち少なくとも一方の原因により印字不良を生じたノズルのチャンネルをマーキング15cの欠落により特定させるようになっている。一方、インク量調整部分15bは、全ノズルからインクを噴出させてフルベタ印字を行うことによって、検査部分15aの印字中におけるインクの消費量を通常の印字時におけるインクの消費量に対応させるように印字デューティを調整するようになっている。

尚、印字デューティとは、チェックパターンの総面積に対するインクで被覆された部分の面積(印字面積)の割合、或いはフルベタ印字時のインク量に対する単位面積当たりのインク量の割合のことであり、この印字デューティは、インクの供給不足による印字不良をチェックパターン15に顕著に出現させるように、15%以上に設定されていることが望ましい。また、検査部分15aとインク量調整部分15bとは、インク量調整部分15bにおいて必要とされるインク供給量の影響を検査部分15aにおいても生じさせ、検査部分15aにインクの供給不足による印字不良を出現させるように、数10msの間隔となるように設定されていることが望ましい。

また、図2に示すように、CPU部4には、I/O部5を介してデューティ変更スイッチ6や図示しないチェックパターン印字ボタン、パージボタン等が接続されており、デューティ変更スイッチ6は、後述のチェックパターンの印字デューティを変更可能に設定するようになっている。また、チェックパターン印字ボタンは、チェックパターン作成信号を出力してチェックパターン作成処理を実行させることによって、図1(a)・(b)のチェックパターン15を印字させるようになっている。また、パージボタンは、パージ信号を出力してパージ処理を実行させることによって、ノズルからインクを強制的に排出させて目詰まりを解消させるようになっている。

さらに、CPU部4には、キャリッジ基板7に設けられた印字ヘッド駆動回路8や図示しないCRモータ駆動回路等も接続されている。CRモータ駆動回路は、図3のCRモータ22を正回転および逆回転させるようになっている。一方、印字ヘッド駆動回路8は、電気接点部41bを介して電気接点部41aおよび印字ヘッド10を備えた印字ヘッド機構21に接続されている。印字ヘッド機構21は、図3に示すように、用紙25に対してインクの噴射方向が所定の角度となるようにキャリッジ23に固設されている。キャリッジ23は、主走査方向Xに横設されたガイド軸24およびガイド板27により移動自在に支持されていると共に、CRモータ22により駆動される走査ベルト26に接続されており、走査ベルト26を駆動するCRモータ22は、ガイド軸24に沿ってキャリッジ23を主走査方向Xに往復移動させることによって、印字ヘッド機構21を用紙25との距離を一定に保持させながら主走査するようになっている。

また、印字ヘッド機構21は、図4および図5に示すように、カートリッジ保持部材31と、カートリッジ保持部材31に設けられたインク供給部材37と、カートリッジ保持部材31に着脱可能に設けられたインクカートリッジ30とを有している。インク供給部材37の前部には、上述の印字ヘッド10が保持されており、印字ヘッド10は、副走査方向に例えば64チャンネル分のノズルを有したノズル部材39と、駆動電圧により変位する圧電素子を備え、この圧電素子の変位により各ノズルからインクを噴出させるアクチュエータ部材38とを有している。そして、アクチュエータ部材38は、駆動電圧信号線40を介して電気接点部41aに接続されており、電気接点部41aは、カートリッジ保持部材31がキャリッジ23に装着されたときに、キャリッジ23に設けられたキャリッジ基板7上の電気接点部41bに当接し、図2の印字ヘッド駆動回路8からの駆動電圧をアクチュエータ部材38に印加するようになっている。

一方、カートリッジ保持部材31に装着されるインクカートリッジ30は、中空状に形成されている。インクカートリッジ30の内部には、インクを含むように連続気泡を有したフォーム35(多孔質部材)が装填されている。また、印字ヘッド10側となるインクカートリッジ30の前側壁には、インク供給口30aが形成されており、インク供給口30aには、上述のインク供給部材37がシール部材42を介して液密状態で嵌合されている。そして、インク供給部材37には、印字ヘッド10とインクカートリッジ30内とを連通させるインク誘導路37aが形成されており、インク誘導路37aは、フォーム35に含まれたインクを印字ヘッド10の全チャンネルに供給するようになっている。また、インクカートリッジ30の背面壁には、大気連通孔30bが形成されており、大気連通孔30bは、印字ヘッド10による印字によりインクが消費されたときに、消費量に相当する体積分の空気をインクカートリッジ30内に送り込むようになっている。

上記の構成において、図6のノズルチェックのフローチャートに基づいてインクジェット記録装置の動作を説明する。チェックパターン印字ボタンが押圧されると、図2に示すように、チェックパターン印字信号がI/O部5を介してCPU部4に出力されることになる(S1)。チェックパターン印字信号を受信したCPU部4は、ROM部2に格納されたチェックパターン作成処理ルーチンを実行することなり、デューティ変更スイッチ6により設定された印字デューティを読み取った後、この印字デューティに対応するチェックパターン15を印字するように、RAM部3に形成されたプリントバッファとなる印字データ記憶領域に印字データを書き込むことになる。

この後、図3に示すように、用紙25が図示しない紙送り装置により副走査方向Yに搬送され、所定位置に到達して停止された後、印字ヘッド機構21がCRモータ22および走査ベルト26により主走査されることになる。そして、図2に示すように、RAM部3の印字データが印字ヘッド駆動回路8に出力され、主走査される印字ヘッド10に対して駆動電圧が所定のタイミングで印加されることによって、図1(a)・(b)に示すように、全ノズルからインクを噴出してベタ印字としたインク量調整部分15bと、ノズルを複数チャンネル毎に順次選択してマーキング15c…を形成した検査部分15aとを交互に有した1バンド分のチェックパターン15が印字されることになる(S2)。

チェックパターン15が印字されると、オペレータや光学センサによりチェックパターン15中にドット抜け(マーキング15cの欠落)があるか否かが判定されることになる(S3)。この際、図1(a)のチェックパターン15のようにドット抜けがない場合には(S3,NO)、目詰まりによる印字不良およびインクの供給不足により印字不良が発生していないとして通常の印字モードに復帰されることになる(S4)。一方、図1(b)のチェックパターン15のようにドット抜けがある場合には(S3,YES)、印字不良を生じているノズルのチャンネルが検査部分15aから特定された後、S1の実行直前にパージ処理が行われた否かが判定されることになる(S5)。そして、パージ処理が行われていた場合には(S5,YES)、インク切れであると判断され、図4のインクカートリッジ30が交換されることになる(S6)。

一方、パージ処理が行われていない場合には(S5,NO)、図2に示すように、パージボタンが押圧され、パージ信号がI/O部5を介してCPU部4に出力されることになる(S7)。パージ信号を受信したCPU部4は、ROM部2に格納されたパージ処理ルーチンを実行することなり、印字ヘッド10を図示しないパージ処理位置に移動させ、印字ヘッド10からインクを強制的に排出させることになる(S8)。この後、再度、S1から実施され、チェックパターン印字ボタンの押圧(S1)およびチェックパターン15の印字(S2)が行われた後、チェックパターン15にドット抜け(マーキング15cの欠落)がない場合には(S3,NO)、パージ処理により目詰まりが解消したとして通常の印字モードに復帰され(S4)、ドット抜けがある場合には(S3,YES)、S5においてパージ処理済みであると判定され(S5,YES)、インクカートリッジ30が交換されることになる(S6)。

尚、本実施の形態におけるチェックパターン15は、図1(a)・(b)に示すように、検査部分15aとインク量調整部分15bとを交互に形成したものからなっているが、これに限定されることはない。即ち、チェックパターン15は、図7(a)・(b)に示すように、検査部分15aとインク量調整部分15bとを並列的に主走査方向に形成したものであっても良く、この場合には、チェックパターン15の全範囲において正確にインク量を設定することが可能になる。また、本実施の形態におけるチェックパターン15は図1(a)・(b)に示すように、マーキング15c…を副走査方向に複数個単位で形成したものからなっているが、これに限定されることもなく、図7(a)・(b)に示すように、副走査方向に1個単位でマーキング15cを階段状に形成したものからなっていても良い。そして、この場合には、図7(b)の欠落したマーキング15cの位置A(チャンネル)を段数の読み取りから容易に特定することが可能になる。

これら請求項1または2の発明により、ノズルの目詰まりによる印字不良と、インクの供給不足による印字不良とを検査することが可能なチェックパターンを印字することができるため、印字不良の検査を短時間で完了させることができるという効果を奏する。また、インク量調整部分において必要とされるインク供給量の影響を検査部分においても生じさせ、検査部分にインク供給不足による印字不良を出現させることができるという効果を奏する。
