Description
【0001】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a photochromic display element that uses light emitted from an electroluminescent element as excitation light.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, a display element using a photochromic material is known, and it is known to have a memory property by using a fluoride compound, a diarylethene compound, or the like, which is a photochromic material in which a decoloring reaction due to heat is suppressed. Since these photochromic display elements do not emit light themselves, the display information is memorized by writing with light of the wavelength that the photochromic material develops color from the outside, and the display is performed by irradiating light of the wavelength that the photochromic material decolorizes. Erase information. Therefore, although energy saving, an external light source for writing and erasing is required, and thus there is a problem that the configuration of the display medium is complicated (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
[0003]
On the other hand, a light-emitting element has been developed that emits light with energy generated by energizing a thin film (light-emitting body) with a counter electrode sandwiched between opposed electrodes. An electroluminescent element, which is one of the light emitting elements, is particularly attracting attention because the element can be made thinner and lighter and can emit light with high luminance at a low driving voltage.
[0004]
As electroluminescent elements, organic electroluminescent elements (hereinafter abbreviated as organic EL elements) and inorganic electroluminescent elements (hereinafter abbreviated as inorganic EL elements) are known.
[0005]
In general, an organic EL element has a structure in which an anode, a light emitting layer containing a light emitting substance, and a cathode are sequentially laminated. When a voltage is applied between the positive and negative electrodes, electrons from the cathode and holes from the anode are injected into the light emitting layer. The injected electrons and holes are recombined in the luminescent material, and the luminescent material generates excitons. Light emission occurs when the exciton is deactivated to the ground state.
An inorganic EL element has an inorganic dielectric layer having fluorescence between an anode and a cathode, and light emission occurs when a voltage is applied to the inorganic dielectric layer having fluorescence.
[0006]
However, in order to maintain display as a display medium, these electroluminescent elements need to continuously emit current and emit light. As a result, there is a problem that the lifetime is short or power consumption is large.
[0007]
There has been proposed an optical memory in which a high conductive portion and a low conductive portion of a photochromic material are formed by pattern exposure from the outside of the element, and electroluminescence is emitted using the high conductive portion (see, for example, Patent Document 2). However, an external light source and a mask on which the pattern is recorded are necessary for pattern exposure, and there is a problem that the configuration of the display medium is complicated, and since continuous light emission is required for pattern display, a current is constantly supplied. However, the problem of high power consumption has not been solved yet. Furthermore, since a mask on which a pattern is formed is required, it is necessary to replace the mask each time the display is changed, which is not economical. In addition, this method does not display photochromic light emitted from electroluminescence as excitation light.
[0008]
Furthermore, a display element in which a photochromic layer is combined with an inorganic EL element has also been proposed (see, for example, Patent Document 3). However, since the photochromic layer is used as a shutter function for blocking the light incident from the back surface of the inorganic EL element and improving the display characteristics, the above problem has not been solved. Also, this method does not display photochromic light emitted from electroluminescence as excitation light.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
A problem to be solved by the present invention is a photochromic display element that has a simple and energy-saving display medium configuration and can freely change the display by an internal light emission pattern without using a pattern mask at the time of display. Is to provide.
[0011]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The inventors have incorporated the above-described layer containing a photochromic material (hereinafter abbreviated as a photochromic layer) inside or outside the electroluminescent element and using the electroluminescent element as an excitation light source of the photochromic display element. Settled. In particular,
[0012]
1. Since the photochromic layer is only incorporated inside or outside the electroluminescent element, the configuration is simple.
[0013]
2. By simply changing the light emission pattern of the electroluminescent element, a display corresponding to the pattern can be drawn on the photochromic layer. If a photochromic material in which a decoloring reaction due to heat is suppressed is used as the photochromic material, the photochromic layer can maintain its display for a certain period of time even if the light emission of the electroluminescent element is stopped. This pattern can be displayed arbitrarily by making the electrode strip-shaped and displaying the dot pattern by simple matrix driving in which the rectangular electrode is orthogonal to the display surface and the back surface, active driving using TFTs, or the like. Furthermore, if the pattern of the element is formed into a color filter-like pattern used for liquid crystal display, using a material showing a color such as red, green, blue, or cyan, magenta, yellow when the color of the photochromic layer is developed, Multicolor or full color display is also possible.
[0014]
3. Since the display can be maintained without applying voltage, energy is saved.
[0015]
That is, the present invention relates to a photochromic display element that uses light emitted from an electroluminescent element as excitation light. And having a light emitting layer containing a light emitting substance between a substrate having two electrodes, at least one of which is a transparent substrate having a transparent electrode provided with a photochromic layer on one surface. A photochromic display element is provided.
[0016]
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The photochromic display element of the present invention incorporates a photochromic layer inside or outside the electroluminescent element. Specifically, an electroluminescent element having a layer containing a light emitting substance (hereinafter, abbreviated as a light emitting layer) between a substrate having two electrodes, the transparent substrate having a transparent electrode being at least one of the substrates. Having a photochromic layer on the side opposite to the transparent electrode side of the transparent substrate (ie outside the electroluminescent element), having a photochromic layer on the transparent electrode (ie inside the electroluminescent element), or A photochromic layer is provided between the transparent substrate and the transparent electrode (that is, inside the electroluminescent element).
The photochromic layer may be in contact with the transparent electrode surface or the transparent substrate surface, or may not be in contact therewith.
[0017]
In the present invention, the electroluminescent element refers to an electroluminescent element having at least one light emitting layer in contact with an electrode between a substrate having two electrodes, at least one of which is a transparent substrate having a transparent electrode. Moreover, in this invention, a positive hole transport layer and an electron carrying layer are included, and it is called a light emitting layer.
[0018]
When a voltage is applied to the electroluminescent element, the value of current flowing at a certain voltage or higher increases and the light emitting layer of the electroluminescent element emits light. This light becomes excitation light, and the photochromic material in the photochromic layer is colored. If the electrodes are strip-shaped, and the simple matrix drive in which the strip-shaped electrodes are orthogonally crossed on the display surface and the back surface, active drive using TFTs, etc., the electroluminescent element can emit light like an image, and the image is photochromic. You can write to the layer.
[0019]
At this time, monochromatic color display is possible by irradiating the photochromic layer with a light emission pattern by the above driving method. In multi-color or full-color display, a material that shows red, green, blue, or cyan, magenta, yellow, or the like during color development is formed into a color filter-like pattern used for liquid crystal display, and the above drive It is possible by irradiating the light emission pattern by a method or the like.
[0020]
If a photochromic material in which a decoloring reaction due to heat is suppressed is used for the photochromic material, a memory property is generated in the photochromic layer. Therefore, the electroluminescent element can hold the display if it is driven for a short period of time until the photochromic layer is colored, and can hold the display for a long time by being driven by applying a pulse voltage every certain time.
The memory property cannot be generally defined depending on the element configuration, but generally refers to a case where the display can be maintained for 1 minute or longer after being driven by applying a voltage of 5 V or more at 25 ° C.
[0021]
On the other hand, when erasing an image written on the photochromic layer, light of a wavelength corresponding to the absorption of the photochromic material may be irradiated. Specifically, visible light, typically sunlight, fluorescent lamps, etc. What is necessary is just to irradiate room light for a certain period of time. In addition, a front light used for a spotlight or a liquid crystal display can also be used.
[0022]
The form example of the photochromic display element of this invention is shown with typical sectional drawing to FIGS. 1-2.

Among the layers constituting the photochromic display element of the present invention, the photochromic layer is a layer having a photochromic material and having an information display function. The light emitting layer is a layer containing a light emitting substance and having a light emitting function, and may include a hole transport function and an electron transport function, or may have a hole transport layer and an electron transport layer separately. good. In the photochromic display element of the present invention, these layers may have a structure in which single layers each having an independent function are laminated, or may have a single layer structure having all two functions. It is sufficient that the layer to be provided has an information display function derived from the photochromic material and a light emitting function derived from the light emitting substance. Further, if necessary, a hole transport function derived from the hole transport layer and an electron transport function derived from the electron transport layer may be provided. A layer having a normal information display function is provided on the front surface of the element.
[0026]
All layers constituting the photochromic display element of the present invention, such as a photochromic layer and a light emitting layer, can be formed by printing or coating methods. Of these, spirooxazines, diarylethenes and fulgides are preferred because the photochromic material has high repetitive stability during color development and decoloration due to light and is difficult to cause a decoloration reaction due to heat. Furthermore, from the viewpoint of display characteristics, a material that is excited by light in the range of 350 to 500 nm, which is the emission wavelength of the electroluminescent element, and develops color from a colorless or light color state is particularly preferable. Moreover, you may add an oligomer and the well-known and usual various additives used for an ink and a coating within the range which does not inhibit the coloring characteristic and aging stability of a photochromic material.
[0039]
On the other hand, when the electric resistance of the photochromic layer is high and the electroluminescence voltage becomes high, it can be used after being mixed with a charge (hole) transporting material or a light emitting material.

When the film thickness of the photochromic layer is such that the absorbance at the time of color development of the photochromic material is 1 or more, a clear display can be obtained. In the photochromic display element of the present invention, the outer surface except the transparent substrate surface may be covered with a water vapor barrier film. As the water vapor barrier film, a metal foil such as aluminum, a metal laminate film made of aluminum and polyethylene terephthalate, or the like can be used.
[0065]
The photochromic display element of the present invention is excited by light emitted from the electroluminescent element and colored to form a display pattern. Therefore, to prevent the display pattern from being disturbed by daily light irradiation, the short wavelength light is blocked outside the photochromic layer to prevent coloring of the photochromic material that is not exposed by the light emission of the electroluminescent element. It is preferable to provide a short wavelength light blocking layer. For example, in the case of the photochromic display element shown in FIG. 2, a short wavelength light blocking layer is provided outside the
[0066]
Various measures can be taken to increase the contrast of the display pattern of the photochromic layer and improve the visibility. For example, in the photochromic display element shown in FIG. 2, it is possible to take measures such as making the
[0067]
In addition, a display corresponding to the pattern can be drawn on the photochromic layer only by changing the light emission pattern of the EL element. This pattern can be displayed arbitrarily by making the electrode strip-shaped and displaying the dot pattern by simple matrix driving in which the rectangular electrode is orthogonal to the display surface and the back surface, active driving using TFTs, or the like. FIG. 3 shows an example in which information is displayed by simple matrix driving in which the electrodes are formed into strips and the strips are orthogonally crossed on the display surface and the back surface.
[0068]
On the other hand, the photochromic display element of the present invention can be continuously produced by a roll-to-roll method when the substrate is a flexible plastic film having an electrode on one side.
[0069]
In the photochromic display element of the present invention, when the light emitting layer is an inorganic EL layer, it is driven by application of about 10 to 200 V, and when it is an organic EL layer, it is driven by application of a voltage of about 2 to 30 V. ~ 1000mA / cm 2 Current value of 0.01 to 50000 cd / m 2 A certain level of light emission luminance can be obtained. Further, the light emission color can be arbitrarily set by appropriately selecting the light emitting substance.
[0070]
In the photochromic display element of the present invention, the electroluminescent element portion may be driven for a short period of time until the photochromic material is colored, and may be driven by applying a pulse voltage at regular intervals. Further, when strong light is continuously applied to the photochromic display element of the present invention such as under sunlight, the decolorization reaction of the colored photochromic material proceeds. In this case, it is preferable to apply a voltage continuously.
[0071]
The photochromic display element of the present invention can be formed by a simple method such as a printing method or a coating method by sequentially forming a photochromic layer and a light emitting layer on an electrode of a single substrate. Further, if a flexible substrate such as a plastic substrate is used, it can be produced by a roll-to-roll method, and a large-area photochromic display element can be easily manufactured.
[0072]
The photochromic display element of the present invention is an energy saving type in which the display pattern is maintained for a certain time without changing the light emission pattern of the electroluminescent element part to the display pattern of the photochromic layer so that the electroluminescent element part always emits light. Therefore, the photochromic display element of the present invention can be suitably used for various display elements, displays, paper-like displays, electronic books, signs, signboards, interiors, and the like.
[0073]
【Example】
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described more specifically with reference to examples. In the following examples, “%” is based on mass unless otherwise specified.
[0074]
<Example 1>
As a photochromic material, 2- (1,2 -Dimethyl-3-indolyl) -3- (2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl) maleic anhydride, a mixture of polyethylene glycol with Mn of 400 and polyvinylcarbazole (mass ratio 1: 1) was dissolved in chloroform. And it apply | coated to the thickness of 1 micrometer of dry film thickness, and formed the photochromic layer. Next, a 1% xylene solution of poly (dioctyl) fluorene was applied as a light emitting layer to a dry film thickness of 50 nm. As a cathode, calcium was deposited to a film thickness of 100 nm, and then aluminum was deposited to a film thickness of 300 nm. Then, it sealed using the sealing agent and protective substrate which consist of ultraviolet curable epoxy resins as a protective layer, and obtained the photochromic display element.
In this state, a sharp cut filter Y-48 was placed on a Corning glass plate “1737” having an ITO electrode and both vertical and horizontal lengths of 20 mm and a thickness of 1.1 mm.
The photochromic display element was applied with a DC voltage of 10 V for 1 minute using the ITO electrode as an anode, and then the application was stopped. The photochromic layer was colored dark brown, and the colored state was maintained for 10 minutes or more under room light.
[0075]
<Comparative Example 1>
In Example 1, an organic EL element was obtained in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the photochromic layer was not formed on the ITO electrode of the glass plate “1737”.
The organic EL element was applied with a direct current voltage of 10 V for 1 minute using the ITO electrode as an anode, and then the application was stopped. Although blue light emission was exhibited during the voltage application, the blue light emission disappeared as the voltage application was stopped, and the memory characteristics of the display were not exhibited.
